I have come to fear that I shall never see you again,

and that I shall die of this longing and grief.

Death, O Fawz, is better for me and more restful for me

than to live the companion of sorrow and sleeplessness.

When a letter from you reached me, O my solace,

I placed it like an amulet upon my upper arm.

O Fawz, O flower of the world and its adornment,

you have seared my heart and clothed my liver in passion.

No harm would come to a people whose land you trod today

if they never again saw the light of the sun.

    وَمَن رَآها فَلَن يَخشَى الرَمَدِ

    Whoever she dwells beside, his rising star courses with good fortune;

and whoever sees her will never fear sore eyes.

She is now in Yathrib; no news of her comes,

not even when some people from my homeland make the pilgrimage.

I pray you be spared seeking vengeance for my blood,

O people of Yathrib, people of devotion and right guidance.

Love pursued my soul through its pathways,

until love flowed along the soul's course within the body.
