وَكُلُّand every مَحِبٍّlover داؤُهُhis malady مُتَفاقِمُworsening
Abu al-Fadl's long-standing love has come to light,
Love's passion stirred in Abul Fadl and swelled
and every lover's malady grows worse.
And every lover's malady grew worse

The chestnut Shihri horse wept when there appeared to him
Al-Ashqar wept when love unveiled to him
secrets that unrelenting cares lay bare.
Its secrets, borne by cares that never cease
وَلَمّاand when رَآنيhe saw me طالَgrew prolonged بِالبابِat the door مَوقِفيmy standing
أُسائِلُI keep asking عَنabout شَجويmy sorrow مَتىwhen هُوَit قادِمُcoming
And when he saw me lingering long at the door,
And when he saw me waiting by the door
asking after my sorrow—when would it arrive?
To ask when my laments would find release
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle جِئتُI came مَسَّحَstroked عُرفَهُhis mane

and whenever I came, his mane would be stroked
And I, when I would come, kissed his cheek
by delicate maidservants, like gazelles—
My lips like grazing gazelles, soft and meek
تَنَفَّسَsighed تَحتيbeneath me وَاِستَهَلَّتand began flowing دُموعُهُhis tears
وَحمحَمَand he whinnied لَوif تُغنيcould avail هُناكَthere حَماحِمُwhinnies
he sighed beneath me, and his tears began to flow,
Beneath me he would breathe and tears would spill
and whinnied—if whinnies could avail there.
He’d sob - if only warring tribes made peace!
فَواso alas! كَبِديmy liver مِنbecause of فَوزَFawz تَبكيshe weeps صَبابَةًwith ardent longing
وَتَشكوand she complains إِلىto أَترابِهاher peers ماwhat نُكاتِمُwe conceal
Ah, how my liver aches for Fawz, who weeps with longing
My liver, win your love, though she may cry
and complains to her peers of what we conceal.
And tell her girlfriends what we seek to hide
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was لَمّاwhen آذَنَتنيshe informed me بِبَينِهاof her departure
وَمَرَّتand passed بِذاكَwith that البارِحاتُill-omened passing birds الأَشائِمُinauspicious
And I, when she told me of her departure
For her I have a coat to soothe her heart
and with that the ill-omened birds passed,
While she has left me but a ring inside
تَزَوَّدتُI took provisions مِنهاfrom her بَعضَsome ماwhat فيهِin it ريحُهاher scent
وَزَوَّدتُهاand I supplied her وَالقَلبُand the heart حَرّانُburning هائِمُdistraught
took from her, as provision, something bearing her scent,
Of glancing eyes - her veil weeps while her skirt
and gave her a keepsake, my heart burning and distraught.
From her abstains though ardor burns behind
فَليso I have عِندَهاwith her بُردٌa mantle تُسَكِّنُshe soothes قَلبَهاher heart
بِهِwith it وَلَهاand she has عِنديwith me حِقابٌa girdle وَخاتَمُand a ring
With her is a mantle of mine; she soothes her heart
When she would rise she leaned as if to aid
with it, while I have a girdle and ring of hers.
Her, till her handmaidens helped her to her feet
مِنَamong القاصِراتِthose who restrain الطَرفِthe gaze أَمّاas for وِشاحُهاher sash
فَيَبكيso it weeps وَأَمّاand as for الحِجلُthe anklet مِنهاof hers فَصائِمُso it fasts
She is among those who restrain their gaze; as for her sash,
By God, I never thought her love a rose
it weeps, while her anklet fasts.
Whose season ends when foreign buds compete
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اِستَقَلَّتshe rose لِلقِيامِto stand تَكَفَّأَتshe swayed
وَأَسعَدَهاand assisted her حَتّىuntil تَقومَshe stands الخَوادِمُthe maidservants
Whenever she rises to stand, she sways,
Rather, I found her love most like a myrrh
and the maidservants help her until she stands.
Whose lasting form suits my love's lasting beat
وَوَاللَهِand by God ماnot شَبَّهتُI likened بِالوَردِto the rose عَهدَهاher pledge
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اِنقَضىit faded فيماin what تَقومُappraise الأَعاجِمُthe non-Arabs
And by God, I have not likened her pledge to the rose
Mine are two eyes - one raining constant tears
when it fades, in the non-Arabs' reckoning;
The other forever stung by heartless heat
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I شَبَّهتُهُI likened it الآسَmyrtle وَإِنَمّاand only
يُلائِمُaccords with وُدّيmy affection شَكلُهاher form المُتَلائِمُharmonious
but I likened it to myrtle, and only
I torture my eyes with weeping, as though
her harmonious form accords with my love.
I, their enemy, might wage war incomplete
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَذوsurely possessing عَينَينِtwo eyes عَينٍan eye شَجِيَّةٍgrief-stricken
وَعَينٍand an eye تَراهاyou see it دَمعُهاits tears الدَهرَforever ساجِمُstreaming
And I indeed have two eyes: one grief-stricken,
Happy is he who naps an hour at night
and one whose tears you see forever streaming.
And tastes some grief - for gentle is his sleep
أُعَذِّبُI torment عَينيmy eyes بِالبُكاءِwith weeping كَأَنَّنيas though I
عَدُوٌّan enemy لَعَينيto my eyes جاهِداًstriving hard لاnot أُسالِمُI make peace
I torment my eyes with weeping, as though I were
I marveled that my eyes blamed my heart for love
an enemy to my eyes, striving hard and making no peace.
Though the Throne's Lord arbitrates their defeat
فَطوبىso blessedness لِمَنfor whoever أَغفىdozed مِنَof اللَيلِthe night ساعَةًan hour
وَذاقَand tasted اِغتِماضاًclosing the eyes إِنَّindeed ذاكَthat one لَناعِمُtruly at ease
Blessed is whoever dozes for an hour of the night
When those two quarrel, their messenger to Him
and tastes sleep—such a one is truly at ease.
Is a soft tongue that moans in pain's repeat
عَجِبتُI marvelled لِطَرفيat my gaze خاصَمَit disputed with القَلبَthe heart فيover الهَوىlove
وَذوand the Lord of العَرشِthe Throne بَينَbetween القَلبِthe heart وَالطَرفِand the gaze حاكِمُa judge
I marvelled at my gaze: it disputed with the heart over love,
If love's complaint spoke through each hair on me
and the Lord of the Throne judges between heart and gaze.
It would shame even the wise and the discrete
إِذاwhen اِختَصَماthe two disputed كانَwas الرَسولَthe messenger إِلَيهِماto them both
لِسانٌa tongue عَنِon behalf of الجِسمِthe body النَحيفِemaciated مُراجِمُarguing in defense
When the two dispute, the messenger to them is
For my chest brims with every mortal woe -
a tongue arguing on behalf of the wasted body.
No hair could trace the agonies I meet
وَلَوand if نَطَقَتvoiced شَكوىthe complaint of الهَوىlove كُلُّevery شَعرَةٍhair
عَلىon جَسَديmy body مِمّاfrom what تُجِنُّconceals الحَيازِمُthe breast
And if love's complaint were voiced by every hair
She visits me in dreams, while my bed lacks
on my body, from what my breast conceals,
All but her phantom - empty ruins sheeted
لَظَلَّتit would continue تَشَكّىlamenting البَثَّanguish لَمnot تُخطِmiss كُنهَهُits essence
فَقَدfor indeed مَلَأَتhave filled صَدريmy breast البَلاياcalamities العَظائِمُimmense
each would keep lamenting anguish, never missing its true depth;
In dreams I tried to kiss her, but she shunned me
for immense calamities have filled my breast.
And I regret what dreamt desires defeated
يَبيتُspends the night ضَجيعيmy bedfellow فيin المَنامِdreams خَيالُهاher image
وَمِنand on دونِهاthis side of her غُبرُdust-grey الصُوىthe waymarks وَالمَخارِمُand mountain passes
Her image is my bedfellow through the night in dreams,
When dreams fulfill what men wish in their hearts
though between us lie dust-grey waymarks and mountain passes.
By God, dreams are but fancies incomplete!
تَجَهَّمتُI scowled at فَوزاًFawz فيin المَنامِa dream فَأَعرَضَتso she turned away
وَإِنّيand indeed I عَلىfor ماwhat كانَwas مِنّيfrom me لَنادِمُtruly remorseful
I scowled at Fawz in a dream, and she turned away;
When winds blow from her land into my face
and I am truly remorseful for what I did.
I breathe them in until my throat is cleft
إِذاif كانَthere was فيin الأَحلامِdreams ماwhat يَشتَهيdesires الفَتىthe young man
فَوَاللَهِthen by God ماnot الأَحلامُdreams إِلّاexcept غَنائِمُspoils
If dreams contain what a young man desires,
If you but tried one night awake in bed
then, by God, dreams are nothing but spoils.
You'd say: Happy is he who soundly slept!
إِذاwhen اِستَقبَلَتنيmeets me الريحُthe wind مِنfrom نَحوِthe direction of أَرضِهاher land
تَنَشَّقتُهاI inhaled it حَتّىuntil تَرِقَّgrow tender الخَياشِمُthe nostrils
When the wind meets me from the direction of her land,
Without you, I'd have never visited Hijaz,
I inhale it until my nostrils grow tender.
Nor wed the best that Iraq's brides could bequeath
فَإِنَّكِfor indeed you لَوif جَرَّبتِyou experienced تَسهيدَsleeplessness لَيلَةٍa night
لَقُلتِyou would surely say أَلاah! طوبىblessedness لِمَنfor whoever هُوَhe نائِمُasleep
For if you experienced a single night of sleeplessness,
Our sins against each other swell in number -
you would say, 'Ah, blessed is whoever is asleep!'
By my father's life, of this I am bequeathed!
وَلَولاكِand were it not for you لَمnot آتِI come الحِجازَthe Hijaz وَأَهلَهاand its people
وَلَمand not تَزوِturn away عَنّيfrom me بِالعِراقِin Iraq الكَرائِمُthe noble women
Were it not for you, I would not have come to the Hijaz and its people,
Bear patiently your beloved's gravest sin
nor would the noble women in Iraq have turned away from me.
And if you're wronged, just say it is you who seethed
يَطولُtakes long عَلَيناfor us عَدُّcounting ماwhat كانَwas مِنكُمُfrom you all
لَعَمرُby the life of أَبيmy father إِنّيindeed I بِذاكَof that لَعالِمُcertainly aware
It would take us long to count all you have done;
For if you do not pardon love's offense
by my father's life, I know that well.
Your love will leave you and your pride will seethe
تَحَمَّلbear عَظيمَgrave الذَنبِwrongdoing مِمَّنfrom whomever تَحِبُّهُyou love him
وَإِنand if كُنتَyou were مَظلوماًwronged فَقُلthen say أَناI ظالِمُa wrongdoer
Bear great wrongdoing from the one you love,
and if you are wronged, say, 'I am the wrongdoer.'
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you إِلّاunless تَغفِرِforgive الذَنبَwrongdoing فيin الهَوىlove
يُفارِقكَleaves you مَنwhoever تَهوىyou love وَأَنفُكَand your nose راغِمُhumbled in the dust
For unless you forgive wrongdoing in love,
the one you love will leave you, your nose humbled in the dust.
