إِنّيindeed I بُليتُhave been afflicted بِذيwith one possessing لَونَينِtwo colors (two faces) يُظهِرُshows ليto me
مِنهُfrom him هَواهُhis love فَإِنbut if وافَقتُهُI reciprocate his love جَحَداhe denies it
Truly, I am afflicted with one of two faces, who shows me
I have been afflicted with a two-faced one who shows me
his love; but if I answer him in kind, he denies it.
his love; but if I reciprocate, he denies it.
لَمdid not يَظلِمِwrong اللَهُGod قَلبيmy heart حينَwhen أَودَعَهُHe placed within it
بِكِthrough you البَلاءَaffliction وَأَعطىand gave قَلبَكِyour heart الجَلَداfortitude
God did my heart no wrong when He lodged within it
God did not wrong my heart when He placed within it
the ordeal of loving you, and granted your heart fortitude.
affliction through you, and gave your heart fortitude.
لَوif شِئتُI wished سَمَّيتُI would name فيكُمamong you مَنone who يُعَرِّضُhints ليto me
بِالوَصلِat union طَوعاًwillingly فَلَمyet did not أَبسُطُI extend إِلَيهِtoward him يَداa hand
Had I wished, I could name one among you who hints to me
If I wished, I could name among you one who hints to me
at union of his own accord—yet I have never reached out a hand to him.
at union of his own accord; yet I extended no hand toward him.
كَأَنَّas though جَمرَembers الغَضاthe ghada tree مَمّاamong what أُجِنُّI conceal لَكُمfor you
بَينَbetween الضُّلوعِthe ribs إِذاwhenever أَطفأتُهُI extinguish it وَقَداit blazes
As though ghada-wood embers—born of what I harbor for you—
It is as though ghada embers are among what I secretly harbor for you
lie between my ribs: whenever I quench them, they flare anew.
between my ribs: whenever I quench them, they blaze.
