دائِباً يَشكو إِلَيكُم في الكُتُب
What answer will you give this lover,
What answer do you give this lover,
who continually complains to you in letters?
Who ceaselessly complains to you in letters?

He only lays before you what afflicts him:
He only laid before you what ails him,
he sought relief, but his suffering intensified.
Seeking relief, yet his weariness grew worse.

For a time he kept his passion folded away from you,
He kept concealing his love from you
until he saw a way to make his plea.
For a time, until he saw how to plead.

Lead me to a spring where I may slake
Lead me to a watering place where I can quench
my thirst—or keep me hoping with a lie.
My thirst, or soothe me with lies.
