A phantom came to you by night in the garden.
A charming specter visited you in the garden
It came from Fawz, and my soul yearns.
Tormenting me with bliss, and my soul yearns

Oh, may my father be ransom for the visitor who visited us!
O one visited by the fraudulent specter
He spent the night as my companion, and what a fine companion!
Who stayed my companion, what a fine companion
ياO فَوزُFawz قَدindeed طالَتhas lasted long بِكُمbecause of you شِقوَتيmy misery

O Fawz, my misery because of you has indeed lasted long.
O bliss, my misery has lasted long with you
O Fawz, I have been burdened with what I cannot bear.
O bliss, I’m burdened with more than I can bear
وَالمَرءُand a man قَدmay يُرزَقُare given sustenance أَعداؤُهُhis enemies
مِنهُfrom him وَيَشقىand suffers بِالصَديقِbecause of a friend الصَديقa friend
And a man's enemies may receive sustenance
One may be granted enemies from himself
From him, while a friend suffers because of a friend.
And suffer pain from a loyal, loyal friend
لاno خَيرَgood فيin حُبِّكُمُloving you إِنَّنيindeed, I
نَوميmy sleep أَسيرٌcaptive وَبُكائيand my weeping طَليقunbound
There is no good in loving you; as for me,
No good is in loving you, I am
My sleep is captive, and my weeping is unbound.
Asleep yet captive, weeping yet free
واalas كُربَتاmy anguish مِنfrom حَرِّthe heat هَذاthis الهَوىpassion
كَأَنَّماas though فيin الجَوفِthe body's interior مِنهُfrom it حَريقa fire
Alas, my anguish from the heat of this passion!
Oh suffering, from the heat of this passion
As though a fire from it were burning within me.
As if there is a blazing fire inside me
واalas عَولَتاmy wailing مِنfrom حَزَنٍa sorrow داخِلٍinward
وَمِنand from زَفيرٍan exhaled sigh بَعدَهُafter it ليfor me شَهيقan indrawn gasp
Alas, my wailing from a sorrow within,
Oh anguish, from inner sorrow
And from a sigh followed by my gasp for breath.
And sigh after sigh comes a gasp from me
لاnot يَهتَديfinds its way قَلبيmy heart إِلىto غَيرِكُمanyone other than you
كَأَنَّماas though سُدَّwas barred عَلَيهِto it الطَريقthe road
My heart finds no way to anyone but you,
My heart leads to none but you
As though the road had been barred to it.
As if the path to all else is closed off for me
