تَكونُis بَينَbetween الوَصلِunion وَالصَرمِand separation
تَكونُ بَينَ الوَصلِ وَالصَرمِ
A lover must have a pause
The lover must pause awhile
That lies between union and separation.
Between rapture and despair,
يَعتِبُhe reproaches أَحياناًat times وَفيand in عَتبِهِhis reproach
يَعتِبُ أَحياناً وَفي عَتبِهِ

يَهيجُ ما يُخفي مِنَ السُقمِ
He reproaches at times, and in his reproach
To chide from time to time, though in his chiding
The sickness he conceals flares up.
Lies the root of his despair.
إِشفاقُهُhis apprehension داعٍleading إِلىto ظَنِّهِhis suspicion
إِشفاقُهُ داعٍ إِلى ظَنِّهِ
وَظَنُّهُand his suspicion داعٍleading إِلىto الظُلمِinjustice
وَظَنُّهُ داعٍ إِلى الظُلمِ
His apprehension leads him to suspicion,
His longing is a plea for union,
And his suspicion leads him to injustice,
Yet union would betray his trust.

Until, when his longing torments him,
Until, when longing grasps him with full power,
He returns to the one he loves, despite himself.
He returns to her he adores, against his will.
