حَبيبٌa beloved أَتانيreached me أَنَّهُthat he خانَbroke عَهدَهُhis pledge
فَبِتُّso I spent the night بِلَيلٍin a night ماnot تَزولُset كواكِبُهits stars
A beloved—word reached me that he had broken his pledge.
A beloved came to me saying he had broken his vow
So I passed a night whose stars would not set.
So I spend nights with stars that do not set
فَوَاللَهِso, by God ماnot أَدريI know أُغضيI turn a blind eye لِذَنبِهِto his sin
كَأَنّيas though I لَمdid not أَعلَمknow بِهِof it أَمor أُعاتِبُهI reproach him
So, by God, I do not know whether to overlook his sin,
By God, I do not know whether to overlook his sin
As though I knew nothing of it, or to reproach him.
As if I did not know him, or to reproach him
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle جَنىhe committed ذَنباًa sin ظَلَلتُI remained كَأَنَّنيas though I
بِهِfor it صاحِبُthe perpetrator of الذَنبِthe sin الَّذيwhich هُوَhe صاحِبُهits perpetrator
Whenever he commits a sin, I remain as though I
When he commits a sin, I act as though
Were the one guilty of the sin of which he himself is guilty.
I were the sinner, though the sin is his
