أَهُمُّI contemplate بِالهَجرِof parting أَحياناًsometimes وَأَقتَرِفُand I commit a wrong
أَهُمُّ بِالهَجرِ أَحياناً وَأَقتَرِفُ
فَلَيتَso, if only شِعريmy knowledge أَأَمضيshall I proceed? فيهِwith it أَمor أَقِفُI stop
فَلَيتَ شِعري أَأَمضي فيهِ أَم أَقِفُ
At times I think of forsaking you—and thereby commit an offense;
At times I contemplate parting, and commit that wrong.
Would that I knew: should I go through with it, or stop?
If only I knew: shall I proceed with it or stop?
عَلَّمتِyou taught عَينيmy eye بُكاًweeping لَمdid not يَبكِهِweep it أَحَدٌanyone
عَلَّمتِ عَيني بُكاً لَم يَبكِهِ أَحَدٌ
مِنfrom كُلِّevery شُفَرٍeyelid edge بِعَينيin my eye دَمعَةٌa tear تَكِفُdrips
مِن كُلِّ شُفَرٍ بِعَيني دَمعَةٌ تَكِفُ
You taught my eye to weep as no one ever wept;
You taught my eye to weep as no one has ever wept.
From every eyelash of my eye, a teardrop falls.
A tear drips from every edge of my eyelids.
