باتَspent the night المُحِبّانِthe two lovers فيin خَوفٍfear وَإِشفاقِand apprehension
فَالحَمدُso praise لِلَّهِto God رَبُّLord of النِعمَةِbounty الواقيthe Protector
The two lovers spent the night in fear and apprehension.
The two lovers spent the night in fear and worry,
So praise be to God, Lord of bounty, the Protector.
So praise be to Allah, Lord of the protecting favor.
ياO ساقِيَgiver of drink الماءَthe water مِنfrom فيهِhis mouth وَشارِبَهُand drinker of it
مِنfrom فيthe mouth of مُعانِقِهِthe one embracing him أَفديكَI would ransom you مِنas a ساقِcupbearer
O giver of water from his own mouth, and drinker of it
O you who gives water from his mouth and who drinks it
From the mouth of the one embracing him—I would ransom you, cupbearer!
From the mouth of the one he hugs, I ransom you with a drink.
ماnothing نِلتُI gained مِنfrom هَذهِthis الدُنياworld وَلَذَّتِهاand its pleasures
كَشَربَةٍlike a draught نِلتُهاI obtained it فيin البَيتِthe house ذيpossessing الطاقِthe arch
Nothing I gained from this world and its pleasures
I gained nothing from the delights of this life,
Compared to a draught I had in the house with the arch.
Except a drink I took in the bayt with arched niches.
سَقياًblessings of rain لِلَيلَةِupon the night of فَوزٍFawz لَوif only تَعودُit would return لَناto us
قَدindeed أَحرَقَتit burned لُبَّthe core of قَلبيmy heart أَيَّwhat a إِحراقِburning
May rain bless Fawz's night—if only it would return to us!
A drink for the night of success, if only it would return to us.
It has burned the core of my heart—how fiercely!
It set aflame the pith of my heart, what a burning!
فَإِنَّfor indeed عَينيmy eye عَلىover فَوزٍFawz لَباكِيَةٌsurely weeping
وَإِنَّand indeed قَلبيmy heart إِلىtoward فَوزٍFawz بِأَشواقِwith longings
For my eye surely weeps over Fawz,
My eyes surely cry over the night of success,
And my heart is full of longing for Fawz.
And my heart surely yearns for it with passion.
وَماand not أَراكِI see you أَرىI think فيamong الناسِthe people قائِلَةًsaying
لاقىfaced أَبوAbu (father of) الفَضلِal-Fadl ماwhat لَمdid not يَلقَهُhe faced it لاقِone who faces
And I do not see you, I think, saying among people:
I don’t see you saying to people,
“Abu al-Fadl has faced what no other has faced.”
“Abu Al-Fadl experienced what no other experienced.”
ياO مَنwho لِدَمعٍfor tears عَلىupon الخَدَّينِboth cheeks مُهراقِspilled
وَمَنand who لِقَلبٍfor a heart دَخيلِpervaded by الهَمِّgrief مُشتاقِyearning
Oh, who is there for tears spilled down both cheeks?
O you whose tears flow down his cheeks,
And who for a yearning heart steeped in grief?
And whose tender heart is lovesick.
ياO مَنwho لِحَرّانَfor one parched مَشغوفٍsmitten بِجارِيَةٍwith a young woman
كَالشَمسِlike the sun تَبدوshe appears ضَحاءًat midmorning ذاتَpossessing إِشراقِradiance
Oh, who is there for a parched lover, smitten with a young woman
O you whose passion is aroused for a maiden,
Like the sun appearing at midmorning, full of radiance?
Who appears radiant at dawn with a glow.
أَرىI see المُحِبّينَthe lovers لاnot تَبقىlast عُهودُهُمُtheir pledges
وَعَهدُناand our pledge وَهَواناand our love دائِمٌconstant باقِenduring
I see that lovers' pledges do not last,
I see that the vows of lovers do not last,
Yet our pledge and our love are constant, enduring.
But our love and infatuation remain eternal.
وَماand not نُصَدِّقُwe believe إِنساناًa person يُحَدِّثُناwho speaks to us
حَتّىuntil يَجيءَhe comes عَلىfor قَولٍa statement بِمِصداقِwith proof
And we do not believe anyone who speaks to us
And we don’t believe anyone who tells us,
Until he brings proof for what he says.
Until he comes with words that are truthful.
