أَياO هَمَّconcern نَفسيmy soul مِنَamong العالَمينَall humankind
أَيا هَمَّ نَفسي مِنَ العالَمينَ
وَمَنand you who لَيسَdo not يَرعىhonor لِوَصليtoward union with me ذِماماan obligation
وَمَن لَيسَ يَرعى لِوَصلي ذِماما
O my soul's concern among all humankind,
O my soul, keep away from both worlds
and you who honor no obligation toward our bond,
And whoever does not care for my connection, do not mind him
لِماذاwhy تَكَرَّهتِyou were loath رَدَّreturning السلامِthe greeting
لِماذا تَكَرَّهتِ رَدَّ السلامِ
أَيُفسِدُwould ... invalidate? ذاكَthat عَلَيكِfor you الصِياماthe fast
أَيُفسِدُ ذاكَ عَلَيكِ الصِياما
why were you loath to return a greeting?
Why do you dislike returning greetings?
Would that break your fast?
Does that spoil fasting for you?
وَوَاللَهِand by God ماnot يَسَعُis permissible for المُسلِميthe Muslims (word continues)
وَوَاللَهِ ما يَسَعُ المُسلِمي
نَending of “the Muslims” فيin الدينِthe faith أَنto لاnot يَرُدّواthey return السَلاماthe greeting
نَ في الدينِ أَن لا يَرُدّوا السَلاما
And by God, it is not permissible for Muslims
By Allah, it is not possible for a Muslim
in the faith not to return a greeting.
In religion, that he does not return greetings
فَمَنso who كانَhad أَفتاكِgiven you a religious ruling حَتّىso that رَأَيdeemed (verb continues)
فَمَن كانَ أَفتاكِ حَتّى رَأَي
تِyou (feminine verb ending) قَتليkilling me حَلالاًlawful وَوَصليand union with me حَراماforbidden
تِ قَتلي حَلالاً وَوَصلي حَراما
Who, then, gave you a ruling, so that you deemed
So who was the one who gave you a verdict until you saw
killing me lawful and union with me forbidden?
My killing as lawful and my connection as forbidden
تَحَرَّجتِyou scrupled أَنto تَصِليyou maintain contact فيduring الصِياfasting (word continues)
تَحَرَّجتِ أَن تَصِلي في الصِيا
مِending of “fasting” تَقوىout of piety وَرُمتِand you sought لَقَتليto kill me مَراماan aim
مِ تَقوى وَرُمتِ لَقَتلي مَراما
You scrupled to join me during the fast,
You felt embarrassed to connect in fasting
out of piety, yet killing me was your aim.
With piety but you intended for my killing as a goal
فَماso what تَبتَغينَyou seek بِطولِby the length of الصِياfasting (word continues)
فَما تَبتَغينَ بِطولِ الصِيا
مِending of “fasting” إِذاif أَنتِyou أَورَدتِyou have led نَفسيmy soul الحِماماdeath
مِ إِذا أَنتِ أَورَدتِ نَفسي الحِماما
What, then, do you seek by prolonged fasting,
What do you want with lengthening the fasting
if you have led my soul to death?
If you push my soul towards destruction
