بَكَيتُI wept الدُموعَtears فَلَمّاand when اِنقَضَتthey ran out
بَكَيتُI wept الدِماءَblood بِهاthrough it (the eye) مُعوِلاwailing
I wept tears, and when they ran out,
I cried tears until they were gone
I wept blood through my eye, wailing.
Then I cried blood in their stead
فَأَفنَيتُso I exhausted دَمعيmy tears بِطولِthrough the duration of البُكاweeping
فَماso no longer تَقدِرُcan العَينُthe eye أَنto تَهمُلاshed tears
So I exhausted my tears through prolonged weeping,
I exhausted my tears with much weeping
and the eye can no longer shed tears.
Yet my eyes cannot neglect their duty
كَأَنَّas though الهَوىlove لَمdid not يَجِدfind لِلبَلاfor affliction (word continues)

As though love had found no way for affliction
As if heartbreak could find no other
to enter any breast but mine.
In which to make its dwelling
I shall seek rain from العَينَthe eye إِنif أَمسَكَتit holds back
فَإِنَّfor indeed شِفائيmy healing أَنthat تُسبِلاit pour forth tears
I shall beg my eye for rain if it holds back,
I will make my eyes rain if they hold back
for my healing lies in its pouring forth tears.
For my cure is that they flow
