وَمُراقَبٍand one under watch رَجَعَreturned السَلامَthe greeting بِطَرفِهِwith his glance
وَمُراقَبٍ رَجَعَ السَلامَ بِطَرفِهِ
وَمُحَيَّرٍand a bewildered one لَمnot يَستَطعcould تَسليماoffer a greeting
وَمُحَيَّرٍ لَم يَستَطع تَسليما
And one under watch returned the greeting with his glance;
A watcher returned the greeting with a glance
and a bewildered one could offer no greeting.
A perplexed one unable to bid farewell
وَأَرادَهُand he wished for it حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّas though بَنانَهُhis fingertips
وَأَرادَهُ حَتّى كَأَنَّ بَنانَهُ
طَوَّقنَthey encircled صاحِبَone afflicted with نَفضَةٍshivering مَحموماfever-stricken
طَوَّقنَ صاحِبَ نَفضَةٍ مَحموما
And he wished to do so, until it seemed his fingertips
Wanting him as though his fingertips
had encircled a shivering, fever-stricken man.
