إِلَيكَto You أَشكوI complain رَبِّmy Lord ماwhat حَلَّbefell بيme
مِنfrom ظُلمِthe injustice of هَذاthis الظالِمِoppressor المُذنِبِsinful
To You, my Lord, I complain of what has befallen me
To you I complain of my Lord and what this sinful tyrant has done to me
through the injustice of this sinful oppressor.
Stubborn towards my disobedience, even if he told me
صَبٌّenamored بِعِصيانيof disobeying me وَلَوand even if قالَhe said ليto me
لاdo not تَشرَبِyou drink البارِدَcold water لَمwould not أَشرَبِI drink
Enamored of defying me—yet even if he told me,
“Do not drink anything cold”, I would not have drunk
“Do not drink cold water,” I would not drink it.
If given advice he does not take it, and if reprimanded he does not heed
إِنif سيلَhe is asked لَمdoes not يَبذُلhe gives وَإِنand if قالَhe says لَمdoes not
يَفعَلhe acts وَإِنand if عوتِبَhe is reproached لَمdoes not يُعتِبِhe makes amends
If asked, he gives nothing; and if he speaks, he does not
Unjust, O my unjust ones, I have
act; and if reproached, he makes no amends.
Only told you the truth, so do not be angry
ظَلومُẒalūm ياO ظالِمَتيmy oppressor إِنَّماonly
قُلتُI told لَكِto you الحَقَّthe truth فَلاso do not تَغضَبيyou become angry
Ẓalūm, O my oppressor, I have only
told you the truth, so do not be angry.
