فِراقُكِparting from you كانَwas أَوَّلَthe first عَهدِacquaintance دَمعيmy tears
وَآخِرَand the last عَهدِacquaintance عَينيmy eye بِالرُقادِwith sleep
Parting from you was the beginning of my tears,
Your absence was the first of my tears' reign
And the last time my eye knew sleep.
And the last of my eyes finding rest
فَلَمso did not أَرَI see مِثلَthe like of ماwhat سالَتflowed دُموعيmy tears
وَماand what راحَتwent away بِهِwith it مِنof سوءِbadness of زادِprovisions
So I have never seen the like of my flowing tears,
Thus, never did I weep as I weep over you
Or of the wretched provisions they carried away.
Nor find such an ill-fated journey
أَبيتُI spend the night مُسَهَّداًsleepless قَلِقاًrestless وِساديmy pillow
أُخَفِّفُI ease بالدُموعِwith tears عَنِfrom الفُؤادِthe heart
I spend the night sleepless, my pillow restless,
I spend my nights restless, anxious, awake
Easing my heart with tears.
Seeking with tears to unburden my heart
