Wine through which a company of strangers came to know one another—
A tribe gathered, kin unknown before
No bond or kinship joined them except for it.
Bound only by drink, naught else more
كَأَنَّهاas though it حينَwhen تَجلوهاyou unveil it بِمَنزِلَةٍin a lodging

As though, when in a lodging you unveil it
As if it were, when served in fine array
From the wine jars, it were a flame before its suitors.
Like a flame kindled in hearth’s release at play

كَأَنَّهُas though it مِنfrom دَمِblood الأَجوافِthe entrails مُختَضِبُstained
You see the glass, still undeflowered, passing round with it,
The glass spins though hands stain it not
As though it were stained with the blood of entrails.
As if dyed by blood in slaughter pot
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen اِقتَضَّdeflowered ماءَwater المُزنِthe rain clouds عُذرَتَهاits maidenhead

Until, when water from the rain clouds broke its maidenhead,
Until the mixed drink quenched all thirst
The glass went round, its colors now tawny.
The glass stilled, colors no longer burst

It leaps when its mixer pours water into it,
It flows when water poured makes it seethe
Like grasshoppers leaping from blazing, sun-scorched ground.
Like hornets roused, ready to unsheathe
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen أَخَذَتit took مِنهُمfrom them مَآخِذَهاits holds

Until, when it had taken its hold on them,
Until all were seized in its vice
And their heads bobbed till they nearly turned upside down,
Heads bowed as if the earth turned thrice
راحواthey went off وَهُمwhile they يَحسِبونَthey think الأَرضَthe earth فيin فَلَكٍan orbit

They went off, thinking the earth spun in an orbit;
They leave believing the ground in orbit
If they were toppled, their palms and knees protected them.
Though fallen, sleeping where they sit

When one of them fell on the crown of his head because of it,
If one drops in its haze
They said, 'Get up! No harm befalls a heavy drinker of it.'
They say "Rise! No harm in its craze"
