أَلا تَنهى بَنو عِجلٍ جَريراً

أَلا تَنهى بَنو عِجلٍ جَريراً

كَما لا يَنتَهي عَنّا هِلالُ

كَما لا يَنتَهي عَنّا هِلالُ

Will the sons of ʿIjl not restrain Jarīr,

Will not Banu 'Ijil cease opposing Jarir

just as Hilāl will not leave us alone?

As the crescent moon never ceases its course?

وَما يُغني عَنِ الذُهلَينِ إِلّا

وَما يُغني عَنِ الذُهلَينِ إِلّا

كَما يُغني عَنِ الغَنَمِ الخَيالُ

كَما يُغني عَنِ الغَنَمِ الخَيالُ

And he helps the two Dhuhl clans no more

Of what use is argument to the foolish

than a scarecrow helps the sheep.

As visions avail not the grazing herd?
