Wāsiṭ lies deserted of its people, and so do its valley-ends,

then Rawḍ al-Qaṭā, its desert plain and its standing stones.

    تَسَعسَعَ وَاِشتَدَّت عَلَيهِ تَجارِبُه

    Yet this age has grown decrepit;

it has grown feeble, and its trials have pressed hard upon it.

It was once inhabited; I thought its people

would dwell there forever, as long as a scribe dotted his writing.

Dhū al-Ṣafā is deserted of them, and now its company is

scant; its foxes howl to one another with yelps.

And Ḥadhlam settled in the plain of al-Ihālah,

though he was no settler there when we fought him.

For the sons of al-Barshāʾ, Bakr ibn Wāʾil, lay open

the gravel channels of Falj's valley floor, and its flank.

Raiding horsemen drove the enemies away from them,

and a dark host that engulfs the piebald steeds, its battalions green.

So we are brothers whose like has not been found among men,

as brothers, even when Time grew gray and its eyebrow whitened.

And we are indeed steadfast at our people's battle stations,

when the Khaṭṭī spears' blood-stained tips are drenched anew.

And we indeed bear the enemy's brunt when he sets out

upon a mount whose rides afford no pleasure.

And many a jealous man, his breast boiling with enmity,

drew back wavering from me; his claws did not reach me.

So if you have surpassed al-Kulaybī in eminence,

his faults have already ruined him in contention.

And there lingered for him, between al-ʿUqāb and Rāhiṭ,

the haze of a day whose stars are not concealed.

I saw you, with your straining after Dārim,

like something gone that its seeker can never catch.

So if youth has indeed departed, still at times

I console myself with the sweet drink, delicious in its draughts.

And on a night of whispers, when youthful passion overtook its company,

I stripped a gazelle there whose garments were lovely.

By morning it was hidden from me, while

its traces and places of play lay on open ground.

And we spent the night as though guests of jinn, on a night

when the ailing heart is visited by its healers.

So what a lapse of mine you were, one I never repeated!

And what a heart, ruined by its own wandering ways!

His abundant bounty drew me to the best of kings,

and I am a man who praises him and proclaims his merits.

And I cling to a man's cords: if I come upon him,

I come upon a generous man whose gifts never lapse.

To a benefactor who, should he vie with the Nile, would exhaust

    the Nile's fountains and flood-channels.

And if I seek al-Walīd's favor, he is one

whose roots have raised him to the noblest branches.

    فَنِعمَ لَعَمري الجالِباتُ جَوالِبُه

    The women of Banū Kaʿb and ʿAbs bore him;

by my life, excellent mothers were those who brought him forth!

Lofty in aspiration—his burden cannot be borne

by one quick to tire, nor one whose sea is exhaustible and runs dry.

His cauldrons seethe with joints of slaughtered camels,

when drought's wood-gatherer cannot bring back even two sticks.

Lavish feeders: their bowls come at morning filled with fresh meat,

when the cold's bands lay waste the thorn trees.

The radiance of his face lights the darkness for us,

when the swaybacked, potbellied man's gatekeeper bolts the door.

And no cavalry of any man before him ever reached

as far as his tracks and battlefields have reached.

And the Roman mountains stand with dust-gray passes,

from what his raids and cavalry squadrons have set ablaze

through campaigning, until every belly's store of fodder shrank,

and until his spare mounts grew gaunt from being led so long.

He stretches the course for the men until there snap

the cords of strength, and its long strands split under the strain.

The people's champion—Muḥārib has formed no marriage ties with him,

nor is a Ghanawī related to him below Qays.
