لِأَسماءَfor Asma مُحتَلٌّa dwelling-place بِناظِرَةِat Nazirat البِشرِal-Bishr
قَديمٌancient وَلَمّاand not yet يَعفُهُhas effaced it سالِفُthe passing الدَهرِof time
Asma has a dwelling-place at Nazirat al-Bishr,
ancient, not yet effaced by the passing of time.
يَكادُalmost مِنَfrom العِرفانِrecognition يَضحَكُsmiles رَسمُهُits traces
وَكَمand how many مِنof لَيالٍnights لِلدِيارِfor the dwellings وَمِنand of شَهرِmonths
Its traces almost smile in recognition,
and how many nights these dwellings have seen, and months!
ظَلِلتُI remained بِهاat them أَبكيI weep إِلىuntil اللَيلِnight واقِفاًstanding
أُسائِلُهاI ask them أَينَwhere الأَنيسُthe companions وَماand not تَدريthey know
I remained there, standing and weeping until night,
asking them, "Where are the companions?"—but they do not know.
سَفاهاًfoolishly وَقَدand already عُلِّقتُI was smitten مِنwith أُمِّUmm (mother of) سالِمٍSalim
وَمِنand with جارَتَيهاher two neighbors فيin فُؤادِيَmy heart كَالجَمرِlike embers
Foolishly—for I had become enamored of Umm Salim
and her two neighbors, like embers within my heart:
ثَلاثٍthree women حِسانٍbeautiful مِنfrom نِزارٍNizar وَغَيرِهِمand others besides them
تَجَمَّعنَthey gathered مِنfrom شَتّىscattered places فَعولينَthen they were lodged high فيin قَصرِa palace
three beauties, from Nizar and from others,
gathered from scattered places, then lodged high in a palace,
حَلائِلِwives شَيخٍof an old man فيin مُنيفٍa lofty building كَأَنَّماas though
نَماهُنَّreared them قِشعَمٌّan aged eagle مِنَamong الطَيرِbirds فيin وَكرِa nest
wives of an old man, in a lofty building, as though
an aged eagle had reared them in a nest.
وَماand not زِلتُI ceased أُصبِهِنَّI entice them بِالقَولِwith words وَالصِباand youthful passion
سَفاهاًfoolishly وَقَدand indeed يُصبىone may be beguiled عَلىagainst الخائِفِthe fearful الحَذرِthe wary
I kept enticing them with words and youthful passion,
foolishly—yet even the fearful and wary can be beguiled—
كَعَطشانَlike a thirsty man حَجَّmade for الماءَthe water حَتّىuntil أَطاعَنيobeyed me
رَسولٌa messenger إِلىto لَعساءَa dark-lipped woman طَيِّبَةِsweet النَشرِof scent
like a thirsty man making for water, until I was obeyed
by a messenger to a dark-lipped woman of sweet fragrance.
لَهاshe had فَضلُsuperiority سِنٍّin age فَاِستَقَدنَso they yielded إِلىto الصِباyouthful passion
فَأَمسَينَthen by evening they were قَدalready أَعطَينَهاthey had given her عُقَدَcontrol الأَمرِof the affair
She had the advantage of years; they yielded to passion,
and by evening had given her control of the affair.
وَأَعطَيتُهُنَّand I gave them العَهدَthe pledge غَيرَnot مُمائِنٍlying
وَماand what أَنزَلَbrought down الأَروىthe mountain goats مِنَfrom الجَبَلِthe mountain الوَعرِrugged
I gave them my pledge, without lying,
and assurances that would bring mountain goats down from the rugged mountain.
وَحَدَّثتُهُنَّand I told them أَنَّنيthat I ذوpossess أَمانَةٍtrustworthiness
كَريمٌnoble فَماso not يَخشَينَthey fear خُلفيmy breaking faith وَلاnor غَدريmy treachery
I told them that I was trustworthy,
noble, so they feared neither my broken word nor my treachery.
فَقُمنَthen they rose إِلىtoward جَبّانَةٍopen ground قَدalready عَلِمنَهاthey knew it
لَناwe had أَثَرٌa trace فيهاin it كَمَنزِلَةِlike the encampment السَفرِof travelers
Then they went to an open tract they knew;
we left a trace there, like a travelers' encampment.
فَثِنتانِas for two women مَهماwhatever تُعطَياthey two are given تَرضَياthey two accept بِهِwith it
وَأَسماءُbut Asma ماnot تَرضىshe is content بِثُلثٍwith a third وَلاnor شَطرِa half
Two would be content with whatever they were given,
but Asma would accept neither a third nor a half.
وَماand what مَنَعَتwithheld أَسماءُAsma يَومَon the day رَحيلِناof our departure
أَمَرُّmore bitter عَلَيَّto me مِنthan خَطائيmy error وَمِنand than وِزريmy burden of sin
What Asma withheld on the day of our departure
was bitterer to me than my error and my burden of sin.
رَأَيتُI saw لَهاin her يَوماًone day مِنَof الدَهرِtime بَهجَةًradiance
فَهَشَّتand rejoiced لَهاin it نَفسيmy soul وَهَمَّand yearned بِهاfor her صَدريmy breast
One day I saw in her a radiance,
and my soul rejoiced in it, and my breast yearned for her.
فَثَمَّthen there تَناهَيناwe desisted كِلاناboth of us عَنِfrom الصِباyouthful passion
وَلاand no شَيءَthing خَيرٌis better مِنthan تُقىfear of اللَهِGod وَالصَبرِand patience
There we both desisted from youthful passion,
and nothing is better than fear of God and patience.
سَبَتكَshe took you captive بِمُرتَجِّwith quivering الرَوادِفِhips ناعِمٍsoft
وَأَبيَضَand a fair face عَذبِsweet الريقِof saliva مُعتَدِلِwell-shaped الثَغرِin the mouth
She took you captive with soft, quivering hips,
and a fair face, sweet of saliva, with a well-shaped mouth,
وَمُتَّسِقٍand a well-strung necklace كَالنورِlike blossoms مِنof كُلِّevery صِبغَةٍhue
يُضيءُit lights الدُجىthe darkness بَينَbetween التَرائِبِthe upper breast وَالنَحرِand the throat
and a well-strung necklace, like blossoms of every hue,
lighting the darkness between her upper breast and throat,
عَشِيَّةَon the evening بَطنِin the hollow الشِعبِof the ravine إِذwhen أَهلُناour people مَعاًtogether
وَإِذand when هِيshe تُريكَshows you الوَجهَthe face مِنthrough خَلَلِgaps in السِترِthe curtain
that evening in the ravine's hollow, when our people were together,
and when she showed you her face through gaps in the curtain.
نَزَلتُI lodged بِهاwith her ضَيفاًas a guest فَلَمbut not تَقرِshe served مَهنَأًa savory meal
وَجادَتand she gave generously بِلاwithout ثَعلِextra growth الثَناياof the incisors وَلاnor حَفرِtooth decay
I lodged with her as a guest; she served no savory meal,
but freely offered a mouth with neither crowded incisors nor decay.
فَمِلتُthen I swayed بِهاwith her مَيلَthe sway النَزيفِof a drunken man وَنازَعَتand she tugged at
رِدائِيَmy cloak وَالمَيسورِand ease خَيرٌis better مِنَthan العُسرِhardship
Then I swayed with her like a drunken man, while she tugged
at my cloak—and ease is better than hardship.
فَأَصبَحَthen by morning there were فيin آثارِناour tracks وَمَبيتِناand our sleeping-place
مَرافِضُscattered pieces حَليٍof jewelry مِنof جُمانٍpearls وَمِنand of شَذرِgold beads
By morning, in our tracks and at our sleeping-place,
lay scattered ornaments of pearls and gold beads.
مَهاةٌa white oryx مِنَamong اللائيthose women who إِذاwhen هِيَshe زُيِّنَتis adorned
تُضيءُlights دُجىthe gloom الظَلماءِof darkness كَالقَمَرِlike the moon البَدرِfull
A white oryx, one who, when adorned,
lights the depths of darkness like the full moon,
مُثَقَّلَةُheavy الأَردافِin the haunches لَيسَتshe is not بِمُرضِعٍa nursing mother
وَلاnor مِنamong نِساءِthe women اللَخلَخانِيَّةِof garbled foreign speech الحُمرِthe ruddy-skinned
heavy-hipped, no nursing mother,
nor one of the ruddy women with garbled foreign speech.
إِذاwhen ماever مَشَتshe walks مالَتsway رَوادِفُهاher hips بِهاwith her
جَميعاًall together كَماjust as مالَbent المَهيضُa fractured limb مِنَfrom الكَسرِthe break
Whenever she walks, her hips sway with her,
all together, like a fractured limb bending at the break.
يَقولُsay لِيَto me الأَدنونَthose nearest مِنّيto me قَرابَةًin kinship
لَعَلَّكَperhaps you are مَسحورٌbewitched وَماyet not بِيَin me مِنany سِحرِsorcery
My closest kinsmen say to me,
"Perhaps you are bewitched"—yet I am under no spell.
فَقُلتُso I said أَقِلّواlessen اللَومَthe blame لاdo not تَعذُلونَنيreproach me
هُبِلتُمmay you be bereaved هَلِis الصافيthe clear مِنَof الماءِwater كَالكَدرِlike the muddy
I said, "Lessen your blame; do not reproach me.
May you be bereaved! Is clear water like muddy water?"
سَرَيتُI traveled by night إِلَيهاto her إِذwhen دَجاgrew dark اللَيلُthe night واحِداًalone
وَكَمand how many مِنof فَتىًa young man قَدalready ضافَهُhas visited him الهَمُّcare لاnot يَسريtravels by night
I traveled to her alone when the night grew dark,
and many a youth whom care has visited does not travel by night.
فَجِئتُso I came بِتَخفيرِunder the protection of الوَصيلِthe close companion وَشاعَنيand escorted me
أَخوa brother of الهَمِّcare مِقدامٌbold عَلىbefore الهَولِterror كَالصَقرِlike a falcon
I came under a close companion's protection, and was escorted
by a brother of care, bold before terror like a falcon.
مَعيwith me فِتيَةٌyoung men ماnot يَسأَلونَthey ask بِهالِكٍabout one who perishes
إِذاwhen ماever تَناشواthey reach for the drink أَسبَلواthey let hang سَبَلَthe hems الأُزرِof the waistcloths
With me were young men who never ask about one who has perished;
when they reach for the drink, they let their waistcloths' hems hang loose.
وَإِجّانَةٌand a basin فيهاin it الزُجاجُglass cups كَأَنَّهاas though they were

and a basin with glass cups in it, as though they were
waterbirds afloat on the open sea.
