The heart sobered from Arwā, and its folly ceased.

Yet love of Arwā brought its mad fancies back.

Tell me truly: we never meet you except ailing,

Tending a heart whose torments never sleep.

Wāsiṭ lies waste without her, and Iljām Ḥāmiz,

And Rawḍ al-Qaṭā, its open plain and its thickets.

Once there was a dwelling of hers we delighted in:

Uʿāmiq, its stony sands and its hollows.

For she has made us like a company she leaves behind.

A far separation called her away from us—if only she

Had stayed as long as the boulders stand at al-Kulāb.

She saw that the prime of youth had passed,

And that the swift forerunners of gray had overtaken me.

I became a man of Kufa, while her people were

Beyond Mard's passes and its towering peaks.

A pledge of protection from God will yet carry us onward,

And noon travel joined to a night I journey through without pause,

And a mount that scorns the desert's heart when it sets out,

Its withers girt with a compact saddle of hackberry wood.

It is as though I sweep the earth away on a full-grown wild ass,

A brother of the wilderness, his loose coat blown away.

Long thirst has tucked his belly in, and drawn

His guts against a back with sharply cleft haunch-muscles.

The old jack fed on the meadow's moisture until he shed

His birth-coat, and the stores within him shrank.

When the grass-awns twisted in his lips,

And their embedded barbs and withered stalks pained him,

He remembered Qarʿāʾ al-Qutūd, but found

No watering place there, since his pools had failed him.

He stood like an upright stone, casting his gaze

At every looming shape toward which he turned.

He reminded his herd, when summer had carried away the moisture

And the sun blazed upon him, of water sweet at its springs.

So he set out, and they set out; he met them breast-on,

His mighty bulk driving them over the stony ridges.

So long did the hard running last that he seemed

To see a rival fighting him in the black flint.

In the noon heat of a blazing day whose afternoons are windless.

At the frights he gives them—his foals and his mates.

And his harsh braying and ringing cries have worn them lean.

    عَلَيهِنَّ ذَيّالٌ خَفيفٌ ذَلاذِلُه

    Watchful over the rearmost, he sniffs their genitals;

He stands over them, long-tailed, his fringes lightly swinging.

Every long-necked mare wags her tail before him; he quivers

When his leg-sinews slacken from long running.

The females surrounding him are as though they were

Strands of an Andarī rope, expertly made by its twister.

And green stretches of valley, their lower reaches lush.

He kept sniffing the pool until they were muddied—

His pasterns and lips—with the banks' clay.

At the overflowing water, mosquitoes sing to him, as though

They were wedding songs, its cymbal and its jingling bells.

At Ḥayzūm he kept wearing down his hoof-frogs,

Its flint and white stones causing him pain.

Whenever they struck his hoof-tips, they forced them back

Into the hard hoof—its fixed pebbles and its rolling stones.

Yet his solid hoof-frogs suffice him,

And a trusty pastern—his leg-sinews have never failed him.

And many a traveler faces the hot wind's blast on an errand,

To you, Abū Marwān, his riding camels saddled.

To you from the lowlands, until they visit you,

With praise of one whose renown and bounty are lauded.

In recompense and thanks to a man: they never fail me,

Whenever I come to him—his favors and his generous gifts.

A brother of war, forever summoned against a band

Of Harūris, or a non-Arab whom he fights.

He handles the reins in both hands; ablaze are

His fires and his squadrons against every foe.

You laid open the non-Arabs' forts, and they clung

To their gates, fearing the camp where you lodged.

Often striking through riding-camels' hocks, as though

He rivals Jumādā in winter and vies with it in pride.

    وَإِن شَهدَ أَجدى فَيضُهُ وَجَداوِلُه

    When he is absent from us, our Euphrates is absent;

When he is present, his flood and streams enrich us.

You are a fortress of Quraysh, and I

Hold to the strands of a rope from you that I never abandon.

May God reward Bishr on behalf of one who hurls himself

Into terror, his vital parts continually assailed.

With the reward of a man whose heart has drawn near to God

Through his repentance, so that his burdens fell away.

For none among them was his equal in adversity,

Nor anyone able to shoulder what he bears.

When men are weighed, none is found among them

Like Bishr; no balance can match Bishr's.

Radiant, the crown upon him, never scowling,

Nor does worldly silver distract him from what is right.

When the doors open to reveal him, you see him

Like the blade of a Yemeni sword, refined by its polishers.

If the delights of this age have departed,

And nothing remains but its biting and convulsions,

Then, out of love for life, I will not flee

To death, even if its torrents surge against me.

So do not make me, son of Marwān, like a man

Whose cauldrons boil with love for the house of al-Zubayr,

Who pledges allegiance with the hand you have known,

While his heart harbors his secret scheme and his treacheries.
