أَذَكَرتَdid you recall عَهدَكَyour former days فَاِعتَرَتكَthen seized you صَبابَةٌlonging
وَذَكَرتَand you recalled مَنزِلَةًa dwelling لِآلِbelonging to the family of كَنودِKanud
Did you recall your former days, and were you seized by longing,
and recall a dwelling of the family of Kanud?
أَقوَتit became deserted وَغَيَّرَand altered آيَهاits traces نَسجُthe weaving of الصَباthe east wind
وَسِجالُand the downpours of كُلِّevery مُجَلجِلٍthunderous cloud مَحمودِwelcome
It lay deserted, its traces altered by the east wind's weaving
and the downpours of every thunderous, welcome cloud.
وَلَقَدand indeed شَدَدتَyou fastened عَلىon المَراغَةِal-Maragha (the wallower) سَرجَهاher saddle
حَتّىuntil نَزَعتَyou gave up وَأَنتَand you غَيرُnot مُجيدِskillful
And you did indeed fasten her saddle on al-Maragha,
until you gave up, having shown no skill.
وَعَصَرتَand you squeezed out نُطفَتَهاher fluid لِتُدرِكَto catch up with دارِماًDarim
هَيهاتَhow far away! مِنfrom مَهَلٍa lead عَلَيكَover you بَعيدِdistant
And you squeezed out her fluid to catch up with Darim;
how far away—a lead far beyond your reach!
وَإِذاand when تَعاظَمَتِgrew momentous الأُمورُthe affairs لِدارِمٍfor Darim
طَأطَأتَyou lowered رَأسَكَyour head عَنaway from قَبائِلَtribes صيدِproud
And when matters grow momentous for Darim,
you bow your head away from proud tribes.
وَإِذاand when وَضَعتَyou placed أَباكَyour father فيin ميزانِهِمtheir scales
رَجَحواthey outweighed عَلَيكَover you وَأَنتَand you غَيرُnot حَميدِpraiseworthy
And when you place your father in their scales,
they outweigh you, and you are not worthy of praise.
وَإِذاand when عَدَدتَyou counted قَديمَهُمtheir ancestral glories وَقَديمَكُمand your people's ancestral glories
أَربَواthey surpassed عَلَيكَover you بِطارِفٍin newly won glory وَتَليدِand inherited glory
And when you count their ancestral glories and those of your people,
they surpass you in glory newly won and inherited.
وَإِذاand when عَدَدتَyou counted بُيوتَthe houses of قَومِكَyour people لَمdid not تَجِدyou find
بَيتاًa house كَبَيتِlike the house of عُطارِدٍUtarid وَلَبيدِand Labid
And when you count your people's houses, you find no
house like that of Utarid and Labid:
بَيتاًa house تَزِلُّslip العُصمُthe ibexes عَنfrom قَذَفاتِهِits crags
فيon شاهِقٍa lofty height ذيpossessing مَنعَةٍimpregnability وَكَؤودِand hard to climb
a house from whose crags the ibexes slip,
on a soaring height, impregnable and hard to climb.
وَأَبوكَand your father ذوpossessor of مَحنِيَّةٍa crooked staff وَعَباءَةٍand a cloak
قَمِلٌlouse-ridden كَأَجرَبَlike a mangy camel مُنتَسىًshunned مَورودِfever-stricken
And your father, with a crooked staff and a cloak,
is louse-ridden, like a mangy camel, shunned and fever-stricken.
