أَلاLo! جَعَلَmay make اللَهُGod الأَخِلّاءَthe close friends كُلَّهُمall of them
فِداءًa ransom لِغَوثٍfor Ghawth حَيثُwherever أَمسَواthey pass the evening وَأَصبَحواand they pass the morning
Lo, may God make all friends
a ransom for Ghawth, wherever evening and morning find them.
فَغَوثٌfor Ghawth فَتىthe champion of الغَلباءِthe mighty تَغلِبَTaghlib لِلنَدىin generosity
إِذاwhen عَيَّfaltered أَقوامٌfolk لِئامٌbase وَقَردَحواand held back
For Ghawth is mighty Taghlib's champion in generosity,
when base folk falter and hold back.
فَإِنand if تُصفِقِjoin hands الأَحلافُthe confederates لِاِبنِfor the son of مُطَرِّفٍMutarrif
فَيَمرَحَthen he exults وَالغَضبانُand al-Ghadban ذوpossessor of العِزِّmight يَمرَحُexults
If the confederates join hands for Ibn Mutarrif,
then he exults—and mighty al-Ghadban exults.
فَقَدfor indeed كُنتُI had been أَرجوhoping أَنthat يَقومَwould undertake بِخُطَّةٍa course of action
طَريفٌTarif وَإِخوانُand brothers of الصَفاءِtrue friendship وَيَضرَحواand they would repel
For I had hoped that a course of action would be taken
by Tarif and loyal brothers, and that they would drive foes back.
وَنَحنُand we أُناسٌa people لاno حُصونَfortresses بِأَرضِناin our land
إِذاwhen الحَربُwar أَمسَتhas become لاقِحاًpregnant أَوor تَلَقَّحُis conceiving
We are a people with no fortresses in our land
when war has grown pregnant or is conceiving.
وَإِنّاand indeed we لَمَمدودونَsurely spread out ماthe distance بَينَbetween مَنبِجٍManbij
فَغافِand the ghaf trees of عُمانَOman فَالحِمىso the protected domain لِيَis mine أَفيَحُspacious
And indeed we stretch from Manbij
to Oman's ghaf trees; my protected domain is wide.
وَإِنَّand indeed لَناwe possess بَرَّthe land of العِراقِIraq وَبَحرَهُand its sea
وَحَيثُand wherever تَرىyou see القُرقورَthe large ship فيin الماءِthe water يَسبَحُswimming
And surely Iraq's land and sea are ours,
and wherever you see the great ship swimming in the water.
وَإِنand if ذَكَرَrecall الناسُpeople القَديمَthe ancient past وَجَدتَناyou will find us
لَناwe have مِقدَحاtwo firesticks of مَجدٍglory وَلِلناسِand others have مِقدَحُone firestick
And if people recall the ancient past, you will find us
with two firesticks of glory, while others have one.
بِناthrough us يُعصَمُare protected الجيرانُthe neighbors أَوor يُرفَدُis furnished القِرىhospitality
وَتَأويand seeks shelter مَعَدٌّMa'add فيin الحُروبِwars وَتَسرَحُand ranges freely
Through us neighbors are protected, or hospitality furnished,
and Ma'add finds shelter in wars and ranges freely.
ذَويO men of يَمَنٍYemen إِلّاunless تُثِرناyou rouse us لِنَصرِناfor our victory
نَدَعwe shall leave بارِقاتٍflashing gleams مِنof سَرابٍa mirage تَضَحضَحُthat ripple
O men of Yemen, unless you rouse us to victory,
we shall leave behind gleams of mirage that flash and ripple.
فَإِمّاso either مَقامٌa stand صادِقٌsteadfast كُلَّat every مَوطِنٍbattleground
وَأَمّاand as for بَيانٌa frank declaration فَالصَريمَةُfor a clean break أَروَحُis more restful
So either a steadfast stand at every battleground,
or a frank declaration—for a clean break brings more ease.
وَإِنand if تُفقِدوناyou lose us فيin الحُروبِwars تَجَشَّمواyou will endure
مِراسَthe struggle with عُرىًlions تَأتيthat come مَعَwith اللَيلِthe night تَكدَحُclawing
And if you lose us in wars, you will endure
the struggle with lions that come clawing with the night.
تَرَواyou will see أَنَّناthat we نَجزيrepay إِذاwhen هِيَit أَبهَمَتgrows obscure
بِصَمّاءَwith an impenetrable calamity يُلفىis found بابُهاits door ليسَis not يُفتَحُopened
You will see that we repay, when war grows dark,
with an impenetrable calamity whose door cannot be opened.
مَصاليتُdauntless warriors نَصطَنعُwe adopt السُيوفَthe swords مَعاذَةًas a refuge
لَناwe have عارِضٌa massed host يَنفيthat repels العَدُوَّthe enemy وَيَرجَحُand prevails
Dauntless warriors, we take swords as our refuge;
we have a host that drives off the enemy and prevails.
