أَلَم تَرَني أَجَرتُ بَني فُقَيمٍ

بِحَيثُ غَلا عَلى مُضَرَ الجِوارُ

بِحَيثُ غَلا عَلى مُضَرَ الجِوارُ

Did you not see me grant protection to the sons of Fuqaym,

Where protection had grown costly for Mudar,

بِعاجِنَةِ الرَحوبِ فَلَم يَسيروا

بِعاجِنَةِ الرَحوبِ فَلَم يَسيروا

وَآذَنَ غَيرُهمُ مِنها فَساروا

وَآذَنَ غَيرُهمُ مِنها فَساروا

At ʿĀjinat al-Raḥūb, so they did not depart,

While others announced their departure from there and set out?

إِذا الأَسَدِيُّ حَلَّ بِغَيرِ جارٍ

إِذا الأَسَدِيُّ حَلَّ بِغَيرِ جارٍ

فَلَيسَ بِهِ وَإِن ظُلِمَ اِنتِصارُ

فَلَيسَ بِهِ وَإِن ظُلِمَ اِنتِصارُ

When the Asadite settles without a protector,

He cannot fight back, even if he is wronged.

تَصولُ إِلى العُلى أَسَدٌ وَتَأبى

تَصولُ إِلى العُلى أَسَدٌ وَتَأبى

مَخازيها وَأَيديها القِصارُ

مَخازيها وَأَيديها القِصارُ

Asad charges toward the heights, but is held back

By its disgraces and its short-reaching hands.

وَلَستَ بِواجِدِ الأَسَدِيِّ إِلّا

وَلَستَ بِواجِدِ الأَسَدِيِّ إِلّا

يُنيبُ لِما يُنيبُ لَهُ الحِمارُ

يُنيبُ لِما يُنيبُ لَهُ الحِمارُ

And you will never find the Asadite except

Submitting to what the donkey submits to.

وَأَشهَدُ أَنَّها أَسَدُ بنِ نَهدٍ

وَأَشهَدُ أَنَّها أَسَدُ بنِ نَهدٍ

وَما وَلَدَت بَني أَسَدٍ نِزارُ

وَما وَلَدَت بَني أَسَدٍ نِزارُ

And I bear witness that it is Asad son of Nahd,

And Nizar did not give birth to the sons of Asad.
