راحَdeparted at evening القَطينُthe campfolk مِنَfrom الثَغراءِal-Thaghra’ أَوor بَكَرواthey set out early
وَصَدَّقواand they fulfilled مِنfrom نَهارِthe daytime of الأَمسِyesterday ماwhat ذَكَرواthey mentioned
The campfolk departed al-Thaghra’ at evening, or set out at dawn,
And made good what they had spoken of the day before.
إِنّيindeed I إِذاwhen حَلَبُthe allies of الغَلباءِal-Ghalba’ قاطِبَةًall together
حَوليaround me وَبَكرٌand Bakr وَعَبدُand ‘Abd القَيسِal-Qays وَالنَمِرُand al-Namir
I, when all the allies of al-Ghalba’
are around me, with Bakr, ‘Abd al-Qays, and al-Namir,
أَعَزُّthe mightiest مَنthose whom وَلَدَتshe bore حَوّاءُEve مِنamong وَلَدٍoffspring
إِنَّindeed الرَباءَpreeminence لَهُمis theirs وَالفَخرَand glory إِنif فَخَرواthey boast
am the mightiest of all the children Eve has borne.
Indeed, preeminence is theirs, and glory if they boast.
ياO كَلبُKalb أَنif لَمnot تَكُنbe فيكُمamong you مُحافَظَةٌzeal to defend honor
ماnot فيin قُضاعَةَQuda‘a مَنجاةٌrefuge وَلاnor خَطَرُprestige
O Kalb, if you have no zeal to defend your honor,
There is no refuge in Quda‘a, nor prestige.
أَعَبدَa slave? آلِthe house of بَغيضٍBaghid لاno أَباfather لَكُمُfor you
عَبسٍ‘Abs تَخافونَyou fear وَالعَبسِيُّand the ‘Absi مُحتَقَرُdespised
Is it a slave of Baghid’s house—may you have no father!—
of ‘Abs whom you fear, though the ‘Absi is despised?
ماnot كانَwas يُرجىhoped for نَدىthe generosity of عَبسِ‘Abs الحِجازِthe Hijaz وَلاnor

The generosity of ‘Abs of the Hijaz was never hoped for, nor
was the muster of the sons of ‘Abs feared when they rallied.
وَلاnor يُصَلّيprays عَلىover مَوتاهُمُtheir dead أَحَدٌanyone
وَلاnor تَقَبَّلُaccepts أَرضُthe earth of اللَهِGod ماwhat قَبَرواthey buried
Nor does anyone pray over their dead,
Nor does God’s earth accept what they have buried.
إِذاwhen أَناخواthey made kneel هَداياهُمtheir sacrificial offerings لِمَنحَرِهاfor their slaughter
فَهُمso they أَضَلُّmore astray مِنَthan البُدنِthe sacrificial camels الَّتيthat نَحَرواthey slaughtered
When they make their sacrificial offerings kneel for slaughter,
They are more astray than the sacrificial camels they slaughtered.
فَأَقسَمَso he swore المَجدُGlory فيهِمconcerning them لاnot يُحالِفهُمallies himself with them
حَتّىuntil يُحالِفَallies itself with بَطنَthe inner surface of الراحَةِthe palm الشَعَرُhair
So Glory swore concerning them never to ally itself with them,
Until hair allies itself with the palm of the hand.
