أَرىI see شُعَراءَthe poets الناسِof the people لَمّاwhen تَقاذَفواthey assailed one another
أَرى شُعَراءَ الناسِ لَمّا تَقاذَفوا
بِكُلِّwith every عَضوضٍbiting taunt تَملَأُthat fills الفَمَthe mouth عاقِرِwounding
بِكُلِّ عَضوضٍ تَملَأُ الفَمَ عاقِرِ
I see the people's poets, when they assailed one another
I see people's poets as they flung
With every biting, wounding taunt that fills the mouth,
Every harmful word filling the barren mouth
جَميعاًall together فَأَمّاbut as for شاعِراناour two poets فَأَمسَكاthen both held back
جَميعاً فَأَمّا شاعِرانا فَأَمسَكا
وَآبَand returned إِلىto أَكفائِناour equals كُلُّevery شاعِرِpoet
وَآبَ إِلى أَكفائِنا كُلُّ شاعِرِ
All together—but our two poets held their tongues,
Both our poets refrained
And every poet returned to our equals.
And every poet gravitated towards our peers
