Wine grew scarce, so a draught came forth.

The wine-vats roared with it as stud camels roar.

And it seethed throughout its days in an aged wine-vat,

Whose fellows had been moved, though it had not yet been moved.

And you see the jars at its two sides as though they were

Young she-camels sniffing the private parts of a stud camel let loose,

Until its liquid streamed from its outer shell—

    Huge in front, bulky below.

And the voices of revelers visiting it seem like

Sounds of lamentation, or the bells of an elephant.

I was told that a slave from ʿAtīb had reviled me,

Foolishly, and he thinks he has done nothing.

A slave whose master from ʿAtīb shrank back,

And hung baseness in place of a sword-baldric.
