Why should I offer condolences—or rather, why congratulate,

While your people are trampled by humiliation and oppression?

When it is said, “This one is past; his era is dead,”

We see a new one, whose ill-omened era is worse.

We are baffled how to define it; then my bewilderment

Runs mad, so I do not know what to begin with today.

For these disgraces have no end,

And everyone rests content in their shade—

Except the people, who have gained no existence of their own,

As though sheer death were sweeter and more blissful.

Your watchword is this hypocrisy, your glory,

And amid the tumult of events, a fortress and a haven.

And a gullible man praising God commits crimes,

And a gullible sinner performs ablutions with wine.

    And a criminal is absolved of this and that;

So who, I wonder, is the culprit who is not absolved?

Does no blameless, noble man remain among the people,

Whose voice resounds and who dares to speak the truth?

Has the whole land of prophecy turned yellow,

And wisdom’s land, bereft of an admonisher who never rests?

And have the poets become like everyone else,

Paupers, each paving the way for error?

They accept praises that are blame itself,

If the living would reason—indeed, they are worse.

They reek of hypocrisy that every living soul spits out,

And because of it the light of truth falters and rusts.

If neither this nor that exists, then let

My poetry’s cry have power to shake and pierce,

    As warning, glad tidings, admonition, and wisdom;

And counsel like mine must not be deferred.

And I am one who may behold the unseen looming

Before me; I recount it, and do not prophesy.

I tell you: your kingdom must be torn down,

Even if deceit delays this destruction,

For you have cheated justice among humankind,

And all of you, ravenous for plunder, feast with relish.

And the philosophy of fate knows no slackening

When it decrees; yet it makes ready.

And no tyrant ever thirsts but is crushed

By a fierce turn of events, thirstier still for justice.

So if you seek an outcome that preserves your heads,

Then rise to noble endeavor that paves the way.

And restore to the despoiled people their treasures,

And guard their honor, which through you is falling to shreds.

    And be subjects among them, not masters;

For one who betrays and mocks is no master.

And we are in an age when the people’s master is a servant

To their dignity, not a tyrant rising above them.

So whoever betrays them betrays the Prophet Muhammad,

And whoever betrays him must suffer misery and loss.

    ومن أخطر الثورات حنق مخبا

    And Islam must kindle a revolution;

And among the most dangerous revolutions is hidden rage.

And then the whole peninsula will become

A beacon for all rebels, and rise high.

Will you not, then, remember and take heed, when you have

Pages of history filled with warnings?

The palaces you built will perish, and erased

Will be your fortresses, while a principle takes root.
