We have known you, O day of life's festival,

for life belongs to those who work.

Thus you taught; all beings taught us,

and the loftiest heavenly bodies, and the sickle.

And in motion lies the very heart of life,

when the lifeless idler passes it by.

So leap around us, dancing and laughing,

O festival, and celebrate as we celebrate.

and in it civilization reaches fulfillment.

And every year we have a moment of pause,

    recalling pilgrimage or an assembly.

We take account of ourselves, while

    the ideal future caresses us.

It sees that we are a nation that does not slumber under

injustice, or let its worth be overlooked.

In it, workers' opportunities have become equal,

and unemployment is uprooted from it.

And in it, equality is the loftiest of

manifestations, and fruitful labor the most beautiful.

And whoever works is the prince,

but a pampered man who jests is not so.

So, O festival, you who have preceded autumn

with the promise of spring that you bear,

and in you is calm, and in you renewal,

    and firmness, resolve, and refuge.

Pour forth in song; pour forth in displays

of serenity and love that you deserve.

For we are guardians of peoples' rights,

even if some among them are oppressed and unarmed.

And it is but a number of years; then shall bow

to truth those who were misled.

We live in an age of revolt against

weakness and ignorance—a revolt well known.

So, O nations of the East, do not despair,

for no future is beyond your reach.

Come, winged with the sciences, toward

the sun, for the sun does not come down.

    Come, fortified with justice,

to glory, for glory is not freely bestowed.

a festival when people became equal and proved worthy.

And I was asked where my life-giving poem was,

but poetry like mine is not something to be asked for.

It poured forth like a spring over the smooth rock,

when the nightingale wooed the spring.

For every sight before me holds a song,

and its humblest strain is what the brook sings.

And its greatest is what humankind has told:

poems that, like love, never wither.

So, O festival, excel through hopes

that are beautiful, for hopes allow no delay.

And, O festival, chant the dearest songs,

songs for truth, never to be neglected.
