We drank molten fire after its release,

Then the cups laughed aloud as the embers leapt,

And embarrassed the dwarfs until they stammered,

And terrified the tyrants in the free man's wrath.

Yes, they wronged it for years by imprisoning it,

And they did not know—for wine is a spirit to those who understand.

And when we roared, it was said: "Drunkards stumbling about!"

And we are not those who yield to revelry and drunkenness.

But we rose up against oppression and filth,

As the cups rose up in indignation and vengeance.

And it was never spilled without having, in our blood,

Rights and judgments against cowardice and treachery.

And no noble cup was a toast to revelry,

But it was a symbol of yearning for the dawn.
