To Ibn Habib, the noblest of my praise,

And from all my wealth, a pittance that cannot suffice.

And oh, how often he has bestowed gentleness on me,

And kindness, and knowledge of rare treasures—my helper.

And how often I have found him like an ascetic,

Nourished by a Gospel, taking refuge in a Qur'an,

While tobacco has scented the air in a room

Where smoke almost conceals him and he almost disappears.

From it, many minds look out at me,

And generations' dreams, and treasures of letters.

And how many eyes gaze fixedly, as though I were

An ailing man, comforted by their guidance and finding healing.

They know my cure is to live near them,

And oh, would that I and others were far removed from them!

And how many a lovesick soul is healed by union, enjoying bliss,

Yet one like me, despite union, is the most yearning of the lovesick.

And Tawfiq watches over them as though they were

His children, refusing any guardian but him.

And he tends each like a pampered child,

Dear, with a Sufi's visions cooing to it.

And the giver of gifts still seems as though he were

The deputy of the Lord of the worlds—my lavish giver.

Whenever I say, 'Pardon me,' he showers me with riches,

And commands me by force, then sets about reproaching me.

And among my offenses is safeguarding his wealth,

And among my errors, my constant compassion.

I am laden with books, and at the Last Gathering my portion is

The book in my right hand, not an importunate petitioner's pages.

    فأزجرها وهو المبيحُ تلهفي

    My soul longs to possess even a small share of them;

So I rebuke it, while he permits my yearning.

And he condemns my restraint with anger far exceeding mine

Against my soul, and will accept nothing short of my excess.

    He says, 'All the books are yours, if you wish;

And how many a friend among them has yet to be introduced!

Perhaps you can unveil them to the people:

Charms that never crossed an author's mind.'

    يُحيرني فيما أروم وأصطفى

    And I look at the books as they smile;

It leaves me bewildered over what to seek and choose.

And their joyful owner watches my bewilderment,

And, like Harun al-Rashid, rejects my apprehension.

So every treasure before him is lawful plunder,

And his only share is a philosopher's contentment.

My debt swells, while he scoffs at the debt,

Making light of it and receiving me with kindness.

Whenever he gives me more kindness, I sink beneath its weight,

As though, either way, I am made wretched by one who treats me fairly.

Will he, then, accept a lightening of the burden of his bounty

Through what I offer to his faithful love?

And oh, how paltry is wealth as a token of affection,

And oh, how noble is love in every circumstance!
