And spreads her bounty among us.
And spreads its expanse within us

Silence has not marred her, for in her silence
Silence does not blame it, for in its silence
Is that which inspires song in many forms.
There is what inspires our chanting

I questioned her when I contemplated her,
When I contemplated it, I asked it
About her love for madmen like me—
About its love, like my infatuation

Those who belittled the wealth she holds
From the youngest who owned what it has
And exalted the light that communes with us.
And the oldest who prayed to us

So it smiled then swayed as
The garden laughs with sweet basil.

And scented me as it scents
Lovers' dreams with light.
The dreams of lovers with light

A faith for her people, who had never known
A religion for its people, yet they knew
Before, any faith of their own but this.
No god before as their religion

Without it, despite the treasures they possess,
Without Him, despite their treasures
They would have been beggars—indeed, paupers.
They would be barefoot and miserable

A smile fills their faces,
A smile fills their homes
So you do not see the weepers weeping.
So you see no weeping weepers

And even if they call to one another with a grievance,
And if they complained of something
The complainers do not end up complaining.
The complainers would not complain

The breaths of this light, when they spread,
The breaths of this light, when they blew
Made the afflicted carefree.
Turned the suffering into playful ones

So they chirped in it, as if
As though they had become pharaohs.
They had become nightingales

As if I increased their joy
And housed them in my poetry as gardens.
And inhabited them with my poems

The towering branches flirted with me
With tongues of light, telling tales.
With tongues narrating the light

And its best made by our hands
