    تمضى ولا تمضى بها آلامي

    The forty days are the echo of my bleeding heart;

they pass, but my pains do not pass with them.

What use is stoicism, like dye for locks

whose color has faded? What use is a truce without peace?

    وعواطفي ثكلى عليك دوامى

    My soul is at war, and your absence is my torment;

my feelings, bereft for you, are bleeding.

Time's wars, in all its crimes,

are no harsher or more dreadful than my deep wounds.

    Every day—indeed, at every moment—

your image is still here before me.

My heart converses with it, and I hear its voice

in refined speech free from harm and quarrel,

absorbed in what he says, like a monk

immersed in the wafting breaths of inspiration.

And his eloquence flowed in sweet succession,

like a succession of pools flowing with melodies.

His gentleness held a lofty dignity, just as

noble character held the dignity of the high-minded.

He offers the finest meanings to minds,

as though they were the choicest drink for one athirst—

except my own mind, whose thirst is not quenched,

and sorrows turn me back from my illusions.

You were to me beauty's image, in all it held

    of insight, feelings, and aspirations,

and noble character and soundness of body,

    rare among souls and bodies.

You were my new hope in my present

and my future; then my years were scattered.

I thought my happiness lay in fate's palm,

but behold, misery held the loose end of my rein.

Alas for the calamity, which had mockingly masked itself

in love and broad, burgeoning hope,

appearing among friends; so we were beguiled

by this all-embracing smile of the days,

until, bewildered, we were struck by our calamity

in every dream we had kept safe.

As though those gifts had never existed,

and as though fairness were utterly forbidden.

    أبكى كأنَّ الدمعَ من إحرامي

    Here is my reverent circling around your grave;

I weep as though tears were part of my pilgrim consecration.

And I walk upon your earth, treading gently, not

from reverence alone, but as a bleeding martyr.

I walk as though scattered jewels

were this soil; my own advance turns me back.

O mind, do not think: that is delusion.

Shrink back; and, O eye of the beloved, feign blindness.

This is the justice of a world boasting

of evil—nay, the justice of the exalted God.

This is the fate of brilliance and guidance,

and nobility, beneath stones and dust.

This is the outcome of youth's dreams,

and the end of faith and dreams.

We were preparing, just as you wished, the trappings

of the wedding; they became witnesses to death.

So why did you leave those who lost you to grieve,

men though they are, like orphans mourning you?

Alas, my little son, while you lie among shoots

that sprang up as feelings of anguish and passionate love,

they fluttered sadly upon the sunset wind

and yearned with bitterness and burning thirst.

No one among our company was worthier than you

of life, or farther than you from the sleepers.

The world betrayed you, as though you had not been

a treasure to it, with your dauntless youth,

or as though your kindness had not enriched its beauty

with its own beauty and smiling tenderness.

O you who leave me in an anguish not healed

by my fortitude, nor dispelled by my submission to God,

let me visit you, lamenting and asking questions—

rather, seeking refuge from my anguish and burning fire.

Perhaps you and I, in conversation, may find contentment in

some consolation, and I may draw it as my wine.

Which calamities felled you through their guile,

so you were slain like flowers within their buds?

Which injustices parted you from the one

you held sacred for eternity, not merely years?

Which disasters were gathered in a night,

so dark, that led us into an age of darkness,

until you breathed in poisons, at peace,

and, when you were lost, I lost all my peace?

I shall live in loving remembrance of you, and each of us

is that lover, throughout my days.

And I shall come as your faithful visitor, as though I

had not lost you, and my visit had never happened.

Perhaps through my love and absorption I may gain

some healing, and my reproachers may find guidance,

and win my vengeance upon a wicked age—

for that is more honorable to me than surrender.
