    The first thrust on the day of vengeance does not suffice me,

    nor does singing of justice for the millions.

    Around me are tears and fires set ablaze,

    though I have gone far away; and thousands of sacrificial victims

    have assailed me in my wakefulness and in my drowsiness,

    and bewildered me with the cries of the mad—

    غيرُ الجراح وعضَّاتِ الشياطين

    the hungry, the naked, whom nothing covers

    but wounds and the bites of devils;

    غيرُ الخرابِ وغير المنزِل الدون

    the resentful, to whom no one listens

    but ruin and the lowly dwelling;

    في سجنِ أرواحهم كلَّ المساجين

    the bewildered in shackles, who have envied

    in the prison of their souls, all the prisoners;

    غدرَ العتاةِ وأنجاس السلاطين

    those bearing on their shoulders, for ages,

    the treachery of despots and the filth of sultans;

    ذل الجباهِ ولا بؤسُ المساكين

    those drifting as dust, equaled by neither

    the abasement of brows nor the misery of the poor;

    من كل حسبانه دونَ البراهينِ

    the lost, as though time had omitted them

    from all its reckoning, without proof;

    ومنَّهم بالأذى شتَّى الرياحينِ

    those reaping people's hypocrisy as commendation,

    and their hurtful reminders of favors as fragrant flowers of every kind;

    My people's sons, whom I have not outstripped in aspiration

    except through noble vengeance in my collected verse,

    from every verse whose sign is a blaze of fire,

    and light its proof throughout all time.

    If it escapes the hearing of those heedlessly lost in their diversions,

    and who have known poetry as confined to melodies,

    على الضلالِ على غشِّ الموازينِ

    then its revolt will sweep over delusions,

    over error, over the falsifying of the scales;

    And the stones will roar out its cry,

    until they fly as even peregrine falcons cannot.

    And, mighty and powerful, it will annihilate

    the worst of serpents—nay, all serpents.

    The first thrust on the day of vengeance is of no avail

    if it is not made universal to save the millions.
