Slow down, O train—why do you rush?

Slow down, O train, why do you run

While you leave behind the wellspring of my poetry.

Leaving behind a spring of my poetry

أتحسب في المدينة أيّ سحر

أتحسب في المدينة أيّ سحر

وهذا الريف ينفث كل سحر

وهذا الريف ينفث كل سحر

Do you imagine any enchantment in the city,

Do you think there is any magic in the city

while this countryside breathes forth every enchantment?

While this countryside breathes all magic

وهذا البحر يملؤه هدير

وهذا البحر يملؤه هدير

حنون مشبه همسات فجر

حنون مشبه همسات فجر

And this sea is filled with a roar,

And this sea filled with murmuring

tender, resembling the whispers of dawn.

Affectionate like whispers of dawn

وهاتيك السوائم في إخاء

وهاتيك السوائم في إخاء

وأمن ها هنا تلهو تجري

وأمن ها هنا تلهو تجري

And those grazing animals, in fellowship

And those does playing in harmony

and safety, frolic and run here.

And safety here, they wander and run

وكل الناس في دعة وبشر

وكل الناس في دعة وبشر

وما عرفوا بمقياس وقدر

وما عرفوا بمقياس وقدر

And all the people live in ease and cheer,

And all people in comfort and good news

and no measure or rank defines them.

Who never knew any standard or fate

بيوتهمو تصان بغير قفل

بيوتهمو تصان بغير قفل

وصفوهمو يشاع بغير أجر

وصفوهمو يشاع بغير أجر

Their homes are kept safe without a lock,

Their homes protected without locks

and their serenity is shared without payment.

And their description spreads without pay

أتسرع هكذا وتفوت دنيا

أتسرع هكذا وتفوت دنيا

تفيض بكل ترحاب وبشر

تفيض بكل ترحاب وبشر

Do you rush like this, passing by a world

Do you hurry this way and miss a world

overflowing with every kind of welcome and cheer?

Overflowing with all welcome and good news

وفيها الطير صاحب فلسفات

وفيها الطير صاحب فلسفات

وفيها كاد ينشد كل صخر

وفيها كاد ينشد كل صخر

And there the birds possess philosophies,

In it is the bird, philosopher

and there every rock is almost singing.

And in it nearly every rock sings

وفيها الزهر رمز لم يكيف

وفيها الزهر رمز لم يكيف

خلاف الزهر في أكناف مصر

خلاف الزهر في أكناف مصر

And there the flowers are a symbol left undefined,

In it is the flower, a symbol not yet fulfilled

unlike the flowers throughout Egypt.

Unlike the flower in the bosoms of Egypt

وفيها تعزف الحشرات شتى

وفيها تعزف الحشرات شتى

أغاريد الصبابة دون سر

أغاريد الصبابة دون سر

And there the insects play all manner of

And in it all kinds of insects play

songs of ardent longing, without secrecy.

The songs of youth without secret

وفيها الأرنب اللاهي حكته

وفيها الأرنب اللاهي حكته

صداقة كلبنا اللاهي لهر

صداقة كلبنا اللاهي لهر

And there the playful rabbit was mirrored

And in it the carefree rabbit

by our playful dog's friendship with a cat.

Whose friendship our carefree dog harasses

وفيها تنبت الخضر ابتهاجا

وفيها تنبت الخضر ابتهاجا

إذا أثمارها رفت بسكر

إذا أثمارها رفت بسكر

And there the green plants sprout in delight,

And in it the greens grow happily

when their fruits flutter with intoxication.

When their fruits swell with sugar

وفيها النور تملؤه المعاني

وفيها النور تملؤه المعاني

فتغمر كل وجدان وفكر

فتغمر كل وجدان وفكر

And there the light is filled with meanings,

And in it the light filled with meanings

and so they flood every feeling and thought.

Flooding every heart and thought

وفيها الليل تملؤه الأماني

وفيها الليل تملؤه الأماني

كواكب لم تحد بأي سير

كواكب لم تحد بأي سير

And there the night is filled with wishes—

And in it the night filled with wishes

stars not bound by any course.

Stars not limited by any orbit

وفيها الحب ينضر في شباب

وفيها الحب ينضر في شباب

وإن هو ثم فات ربيع عمر

وإن هو ثم فات ربيع عمر

And there love flourishes in youth,

And in it love blossoms in youth

even if there it has outlived life's spring.

Even if after passed the spring of life

أتسرع هكذا عن كل هذا

أتسرع هكذا عن كل هذا

لعلك أنت تجهل حين تدري

لعلك أنت تجهل حين تدري

Do you rush away like this from all this?

Do you hurry like this from all this

Perhaps you are ignorant even as you know.

Maybe you do not know while you think you know
