She calls to us with her aroma—come!

Yes, come, let us worship her together.

Let flowers and grapevines envy her,

and let her spirit love the fragrant soul.

The Zanj nurtured her as tiny grains,

like the kernels of hearts, flame and fragrance.

And her inner nature is pure beauty,

so there is no reproach if her face turns black.

When inhaled, she perfumes every heart

with fruit like honey, smiling and pure.

And when sipped, she roams through every mind

and refashions it into a rapturous genius.

Come, for her gathering is a springtime

clad in the colors of loveliness.

And in her cups is innocent love,

like the love of a child frolicking shyly.

As though her bubbles were made of memories—

calling voices, like stars and the Pleiades.

When fully imbibed, she lifts souls

to heights where wine's intoxication cannot lift them.

As though her blackness hid stars,

    playing with one another, childlike.

Come, let us draw joy from her,

which sets us aglow, and kiss it as a confidant.

For never before has she withheld from us

her delight, nor deserted the gathering.

And how often she has made a welcome return to us,

and how often given to us with lavish generosity!

And we burn her and crush her, and she grows purer,

as though we had committed no monstrous deed.

And we boil her, so she dances in love,

and grants us the nectar of Kawthar.

Pass her round, O cupbearer, pass her round,

and hasten—you may create a prophet.

For from her dreams come surahs and verses,

and hidden inspiration that we peruse.

If wine enriches us with illusion,

we find coffee to be the bountiful truth.

And no dream of sleepers, however extravagant,

is like the waking dream, radiant and sublime.

Pass her round, that I may woo her faithfully,

as I wish, and remain faithful when I leave her.
