    Rise above hostility toward the noble,

    and above offering friendship to the base.

    Both are shortcomings, and loftier is

    the purity of life than the notion of a foe.

    But if enmity is forcibly imposed upon you,

    then take refuge in the virtues of noble character.

    I would rather suffer for my moral character

    than stoop to baseness in the illusion of bliss.

    And whoever thinks me mad for my self-respect

    is neither discerning nor wise.

    For in my soul are worlds that have not betrayed me,

    nor vanished with the pitch-black night.

    For in my solitude, from divinity comes

    my ally, or my guide, or my boon companion.

    Poetry flutters for me in everything,

    with the flutter of song in abiding silence.

    And the forms of my contemplation have embraced

    the forms of the universe in all-pervading enchantment.

    وتغريد الطيور مع النسيم

    And the simplest of them is the murmur of water around me,

    and the singing of birds with the breeze;

    بنشوى الزهر والنبت الجميم

    and the smiles of meadows, beckoning

    with the rapture of flowers and luxuriant growth;

    وأبلغ من دموع لليتيم

    and the moans of waterwheels, which are more poignant

    and more eloquent than an orphan's tears;

    كجبار يصفق للخديم

    and the sea's waves, crashing and fierce,

    like a tyrant clapping for a servant;

    جواهر للغنيّ وللعديم

    and the colors of sands upon the hills,

    jewels for the rich and the penniless;

    ليقهره كشيطان رجيم

    and the spray of water upon the waterfall, until

    it overpowers it like an accursed devil;

    هي القبلات للزهر الوسيم

    and the army of bees around me, making conquests

    which are kisses for the lovely flowers;

    بخمر في تجليها الحميم

    and the dewdrops of the fields, mingled

    with wine in their warm revelation;

    كحاكمةعلى ملك عظيم

    and the herds of livestock as they graze,

    like a ruler over a mighty kingdom;

    كستر الجود من كف الكريم

    and the glimmers of stars behind clouds,

    like concealed bounty from a generous hand;

    and the sun's inspiration as it pours forth a dream

    that has taken many forms in prose and in verse.

    All these, then, are but some of my companions,

    and my treasure when my foe taunted me.

    And as for the rest, they are loftier in stature,

    and the learned one's judgment has not fathomed it.
