With a magician's artistry,
Excels like a sorcerer

إيثاراًout of preference لنجوىfor the intimate talk of الساهرthe wakeful one

O you who shun the sun,
O you who the sun yields to
Preferring the wakeful one's intimate talk,
In reverence of the sleepless whisperer

O you in whom the tables gleamed,
O you whose tables gleam
Like beacons,
Like lamps
ياO منone who تبسّطfreely indulged فيin
يا من تبسّط في
ملاهيهhis amusements تبسّطfree indulgence قاهرa conqueror
ملاهيه تبسّط قاهر
O you who freely indulged in
O you who relaxes in
Your amusements, as a conqueror indulges,
Pastimes, relaxes like a conqueror
ياO منone who تدفّقoverflowed بالمواعظwith admonitions
يا من تدفّق بالمواعظ
كالإلهlike God الغافرthe forgiving one
كالإله الغافر
O you who overflowed with admonitions,
O you who pours advice
Like the forgiving God,
Like the forgiving God
ياO منone who تعلقclung بالطهارةto purity
يا من تعلق بالطهارة
مثلlike فجرa dawn طاهرpure
مثل فجر طاهر
O you who clung to purity,
O you who clings to purity
Like a pure dawn,
Like a pure dawn
ياO منone who أتىcame كالفصحlike Easter
يا من أتى كالفصح
بينamid مدامعtears وبشائرand glad tidings
بين مدامع وبشائر
O you who came like Easter,
O you who comes like Easter
Amid tears and glad tidings,
Between tears and good news

يا من يعدّ أخا

O you deemed a brother
O you who considers
To the poor in the face of a faithless age,
The poor his brother against an unbelieving fate

يا من شأى حلم الصغار
بكلwith every حلمdream طائرsoaring
بكل حلم طائر
O you who outstripped the children's dream,
O you who desires the dreams of the little ones
With every soaring dream,
With every fleeting dream
ماذاwhat ادخرتyou stored up وماand what أتيتyou came

What have you stored up, and what have you brought
What have you saved and what have you brought
For the lot of the unfortunate—
In the stumbling moment

كل شعب قاصر
Be it any incapacitated individual or
From each idle seat or
Any nation of limited capacity?
Each failing people
صامواthey fasted وخيرand the best الصومfasting عنfrom
صاموا وخير الصوم عن
عبثfrivolity لهمof theirs وصغائرand minor sins
عبث لهم وصغائر
They fasted—and the best fasting is abstinence from
They fasted, and the best fast is to abstain
Their frivolity and petty sins.
From their nonsense and petty affairs
إنindeed الشعوبpeoples كبيرةgreat
إن الشعوب كبيرة
ليستare not عبيدslaves كبائرgrave sins
ليست عبيد كبائر
Indeed, peoples are great,
Nations are great
Not slaves to grievous sins.
Not slaves to grave sins
لاnot صامfasted منwho جعلmade الصيامfasting
لا صام من جعل الصيام
ذريعةa pretext للفاجرfor the wicked one
ذريعة للفاجر
He has not truly fasted who made fasting
None fasts who makes fasting
A pretext for the wicked.
A pretext for the wicked
لاnot صامfasted كالتمساحlike a crocodile أفطرbroke his fast
لا صام كالتمساح أفطر
فيwith شهيةthe appetite of غادرa betrayer
في شهية غادر
He has not truly fasted who broke his fast like a crocodile,
None fasts like the crocodile who broke fast
With a betrayer's appetite.
In treacherous appetite
لاnot صامfasted منwho لمdid not يدرunderstand
لا صام من لم يدر

He has not truly fasted who did not understand
None fasts who does not know
The philosophy of revolutionary fasting,
The philosophy of defiant fasting

Which scorns every order
Disdaining every unjust
Unjust or deceitful,
Or cunning situation

Creating justice, upheld
The just Creator, supporter
By many noble deeds.
Of countless glories

Blessed are you, month of light,
Blessed be the month of light
You invade the night without armies,
That invades the night without armies

Amid wedding celebrations
Among weddings
And games and revelry in full swing,
And games and celebrations
ومسبحينand those praising God مرتلينchanting melodiously
ومسبحين مرتلين
إلىto نهىintellects ومنابرand pulpits
إلى نهى ومنابر
And those praising God and chanting,
And praying chanters
To discerning minds and pulpits,
To pulpits and minarets
ونوافحand fragrant breezes علويةheavenly
ونوافح علوية
سارتspread كشعرlike poetry سائرwidely circulating
سارت كشعر سائر
And heavenly fragrant breezes
And Sufi ecstasies
That spread like widely circulating verse.
That flowed like flowing poetry
بوركتblessed are you ولتهنأand may it rejoice بكin you
بوركت ولتهنأ بك
الدنياthe world هناءةthe joy of شاكرa grateful person
الدنيا هناءة شاكر
Blessed are you, and may you gladden
Blessed you are, and may
The world with a grateful person's joy,
The world rejoice gratefully in you
حتىso that إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle عدتyou returned جئتyou came
حتى إذا ما عدت جئت
معwith الخميسthe army الظافرtriumphant

وفتحتand you opened للإسلامfor Islam كنزa treasure of مآثرnoble deeds
وفتحت للإسلام كنز مآثر
ومفاخرand glories
ومفاخر
And open for Islam a treasure of noble deeds
And you opened for Islam the treasure of glories
And glories,
And prides
واشعتand you spread افراحاًjoys مكانin place of
واشعت افراحاً مكان
مآتمfuneral gatherings ومقابرand graveyards
مآتم ومقابر
And spread rejoicing in place of
And you brought joys instead
Funerals and graveyards.
