My pulpit is worldwide, not in a land

Where the tyrant deems devastation lawful.

From its heights, and from ruin and shame.

It did not sever its ties with lands

That had wearied it, even if those lands kept it far away.

Rather, it raised cries in every land,

So they rose in every land as a watchword.

I am the poet of Kinanah, far away

    Or near, whatever my surroundings.

Eight years are no more than seconds

Of my life and my borrowed existence.

Neither time nor place confines my existence,

    Nor night’s darkness or daylight.

And quench their thirst; it is light and fire.

As though in Egypt, defending its honor.

    Or bewildered, and seek glory.

My principle will not change as long as love remains,

And my love for Egypt is alive and roused.

Night was vanquished when day dawned.
