My brother, poetry's beauty is what you scatter

Upon me, as though I were a destroyer of Caesars.

As though I were a prophet whose imagination was unsullied,

And whose offering was to thought, not ritual.

A stranger, torn within, I remembered you in my anguish,

As though you were my talisman against dangers.

And you came, offering me a compassionate host's welcome,

In an enchanting refuge close to nature.

And find bliss in a woodland scornful of humankind.

And my heart, though it beats with a rebel's dreams.

And I had no dream or illusion to sell

Except the supreme ideal that sets my mind swaying.

I rose above the filth of a base world,

Though I lived preoccupied with crushing pettiness.

    And how I marvel—the rumor-mongers conspired

Against me, though my life among them was pure.

As though I were a towering, bursting spring,

Sweeping away in its leap every engulfing surge.

It dissolved the sun's splendor within its clarity,

And its meanings purified a fragrant smile.

And I spent my life in love for humankind,

Yet met only one betrayer after another.

And how few the faithful in a world

Where they hid and found an ingrate's denial sweet.

May you enjoy the pure honey, flowing freely,

As though a poet's epics were recounted through it.

May you enjoy the open air, as though it were

Worlds uncorrupted by oppressor or libertine.

As though you were lord of feeling in Paradise.

May you enjoy the friends who flocked to you

To gather the jewels you have fashioned.

    فلستُ أُبالي بعدَه ما مصائري

    And would that I could secure just my daily bread;

For after that I care not what my fortunes are.

For I am rich in my conviction and ambition,

Though fools deem it a stumbling man's ambition.

And many a schemer around me chants his praise of me,

And ranks me above every man of ability,

Yet stabs me in the back while kissing

My pen, as though I were fate's plaything.

As though brilliance were rewarded with its undoing,

And with fetters for the noble deeds it bestowed.

Vexations I had left behind without regret,

Only to find them around me, embittering my present.

I would ransom, however it wounds my feelings.

And their like in lands of emigration supported them.

Though it consoled me in misery that I

Live in a land where fortune belongs to the adventurer.

Its sons are sons of greatness; from them I have received nothing

But the utmost esteem, despite the gainsayer.

So, my free, unbowed friend, my twin

In my soul and thought, my present and my past,

It suffices me to find you enjoying ease,

Even briefly, O sleepless one who is not sleepless.

For how many nights you have slain without weariness,

For the life of bodies or the life of consciences.

And only two have suffered: you and a scalpel

That held a titan's art for battling tyrants.

Perhaps when I meet you I shall glimpse a flash

In your eyes, revealing the sorrows of geniuses,

And revealing a poet's new dawn,

And revealing the creator behind appearances.

I shall nourish my mind and feelings from it,

And begin a life, content with my achievements.
