May has all but melted into lavish fragrance,

And the beauty of colors and abundant tenderness.

And I see you, O rose of spring, in a slumber

That has lingered, as though you had never tasted my faith.

Do you think your father's pledge a treacherous pledge,

And fear what the vicissitudes of time may bring?

Or not? Why, then, do you slumber, forsaking

    People, in calyxes and sleeves?

And for whom has Nature displayed her beauty, after

Giving you a pledge of generosity and safety?

And are you not her enchanter, her king? How often

You have adorned her with precious crowns!

Unveil jewels whose hues were embellished

By the hands of the stars and the artist's yearning.

I still wait expectantly, for my poetry remains

Thirsty, in need of you, suffering.

All these banquet tables have not freed it

From needing your veiled, thirsty inspiration.

Like me, you thirsted, as though we were strangers in the

world, estranged from inspiration and kindness.

It has not valued us, despite the esteem accorded us,

Nor dealt fairly in giving water to the already quenched.

Within me is the artist's burning ache, as I crouch like you

In my solitude—and the artist's urge to leap.

So when shall I see you, then, bestir yourself, tearing

These curtains, leaping into my sight,

So I may chant a greeting in your radiance,

    Fragrant with light and colors?

Speak plainly, and do not be obscure like a poem

    Folded away in feelings and a heart;

Or like songs in a pool that cloaked themselves

    In waves, and so were veiled from humankind;

Or like love's longing, buried in hearts,

    And the two eyes betray its stirrings;

Or like truth, veiled by our turning away

From it, though never hidden from inner awareness.

Speak plainly, and spring will stir anew,

And love and bliss in every place.
