    Laugh, then laugh, you mockers!

And profit from your torment of my pierced heart.

Laugh; I have no hope left

of curing the frivolous and the dissolute—

those who sold out their homelands,

just as they sold the rights of the toilers,

and deemed it lawful to pelt one like me with abuse,

and sanctioned the might of the treacherous oppressor.

After I left my homelands to you,

every injustice that befell me became easier to bear.

However you please, you may strangle me,

or starve me, as madness willed.

For I am the steadfast one who, though aged, has not

been shattered by calamities and sorrows.

Of my own self, I am a prince and master,

and of that self, a lion in a den.

My anguish is not for myself, but grief

for what makes the wronged people suffer.

Prayers of abasement are in your mouths,

and offerings go to the fat whale.

What a corrupt clique you are,

thinking folly the weapon of conquerors!

These are numbered days for you,

and some days, in delusion, seem like years.

Then the whale goes on; he has you left to devour—

    a single mouthful, without stint.

    Laugh, and relish his drawing

your company close to him, until a day and hour.

    يستوى الماكولُ بين الآكلين

    For your ultimate end, all of you, is to be prey;

the devoured are all alike to the devourers.

The people's sleep is no more than a doze,

and likewise that of justice, or true certainty.

If you think power in this world belongs to whoever

deceives the world, then his mainstay is the honest man,

for the lessons of time, in their judgments,

have neither deceived nor been deceived by buzzing.

Truth alone is the conqueror; never will

truth be extinguished, even if it lives a prisoner.
