أديباًa man of letters ملءُfilling برديهhis two robes الرجاءُhope
It pains me to find the bereaved—
It grieves me to find consolation
A man of letters whose two robes brim with hope,
In a poet brimming with hope
وملءُand filling جَنابِهhis presence نورٌa light أصيلٌgenuine
كأنَّas though هُداهhis guidance ماwhat وَعتِheld السماءُheaven
And whose presence is filled with a true light,
And whose spirit is filled with pure light
As though his guidance were what heaven holds.
As if his guidance came from heaven
أيحسنُdoes he do good للحيياةto life وللبراياand to creatures
فيخذلُso he is forsaken أوor يعذبُis tormented أوor يُساءis wronged
Does he do good to life and to all creatures,
How could he make life and the land good
Only to be forsaken, tormented, or wronged?
Then disappoint, torture or do wrong?
ومنand from أينwhere التاسىّconsolation فيamid المآسيcalamities
ودنياناand our world يعُّجclamors بهاwithin it الشقاءmisery
And whence comes consolation amid calamities,
From where does one find solace in tragedies
While misery clamors through our world?
While our world is filled with misery?

لعزّتناfor our dignity فلاyet not يُجدىavails الإباءdefiance
And we invent happiness in proud defiance,
We fabricate happiness in stubbornness
For our dignity—yet defiance avails nothing.
For our dignity, though stubbornness is futile

وفيمَand why الوهمَdelusion أوor فيمَwhy الرياءpretense
Slaves, we imagine masters among ourselves;
We think ourselves masters though slaves
And why this delusion, or why this pretense?
Lost in delusion or hypocrisy

تُراوغناthey elude us فيخدعناso deceives us الدهاءcunning
And none but the fates are rulers:
Nothing rules but destiny
They elude us, and cunning deceives us,
Deceiving us with its cunning

وجودexistence العالمينof the worlds أوor الفناءannihilation
Over a matter that has bewildered minds:
A matter that confused all minds
The existence of the worlds, or annihilation.
The existence or oblivion of both worlds
تساوىbecame equal كلall ماthat نلقىwe encounter ونرجوand we hope for

All that we encounter and hope for is alike,
All we encounter and hope for are equal
Just as electricity contains forms.
As electricity permeates conduits

وفيand in طىّthe folds of الفناءِannihilation لناfor us بقاءcontinuance
For in the folds of continuance lies our annihilation,
In the path of survival there is oblivion for us
And in the folds of annihilation lies our continuance.
And in the path of oblivion there is survival

Despite the calamity, O Abu Raja,
Despite the tragedy, I, hopelessness, am patient
Be patient when patience is redemption.
When patience is redemption
لئنif indeed غرقdrowned الشهيدthe martyr فنحنthen we are غرقىdrowned
أشُّدmore grievously ولاand no رجاءُhope ولاand no نجاءdeliverance
If indeed the martyr drowned, then we are drowned
If the martyr drowned, we too have drowned
More grievously, with neither hope nor deliverance.
In greater hopelessness and no savior
