    I was told that soon you will gladden us

    With your wedding day; indeed, I wait most eagerly.

    And these are lines I imbue, from afar,

    With my longing for you on a fragrant, rainy day,

    إلا محياك سمحا ماليا نظري

    Where the blossoms around me lack nothing

    But your gracious face filling my sight;

    كأنها من معاني شدوك النضر

    And where, in the dew, melodies caress me,

    As though they came from the meanings of your vibrant song;

    والطل يغمرها بالحب والخفر

    And where the birds rose early, singing,

    And the dew envelops them in love and bashfulness;

    بالذكريات ومن ألوانها ذكري

    And where the trees rejoice, dancing

    With memories—and remembrance of me is among their hues;

    سجودهم في الحصى والشوك والحجر

    And where, in the grass, are worshippers whose mystic devotion

    Is their prostration among pebbles, thorns, and stone;

    يبحثن عن عالم للحب مبتكر

    And where butterflies fluttered like deities,

    Seeking a newly created world for love;

    And wherever insects beyond number

    Have kept far from forms of aggression and danger,

    وقد حمين بمن ناجين من شجر

    And taken refuge, safe, in rain and flowers,

    And been sheltered by the trees with which they communed;

    إن شمخن وما شاكلن للبصر

    As though these were their kin and siblings,

    Even if they towered and, to the eye, did not resemble them;

    تهفو إليّ ولم يعلق بها ضرري

    As though they themselves were part of me when I gaze at them,

    They yearn toward me, untouched by any harm from me;

    كنز من التبر أو كنز من الدرر

    And wherever the warm shore is, for its visitors,

    A treasure of raw gold, or a treasure of pearls;

    كأنها معرض قد طاف بالصور

    I beheld them all in a flash of my gaze,

    As though they were an exhibition that had paraded its pictures;

    So I said, 'Oh, if only Isa were gazing at them

    Beside me, and were my tongue today, or my string!'

    And, since I was deprived of you, poetry cried out in my pen,

    To single you out for the outpouring of my thought,

    And of the feelings of a heart you gladden

    In every circumstance, and shield from misfortune.

    Oh, how few are those who forget themselves

    And gladden humankind as one truly capable can!
