Since with its fragrance it eased my pain,

And spoke with the tenderness of a human being

Who, if I am absent, does not grow indifferent and forget me.

I drew it close to me, and it called to me;

Though it had been plucked, it whispered to me,

Wounded as it was after being cut,

Though it had been arranged in finery.

Yet through our answering each other we became

Two kindred beings, knowing our lives must end.

It thanked you both as I did, rejoicing

At our meeting, and sang through the fragrance it shed.
