I sacrifice by departing; one like me makes sacrifices,
I sacrifice my travels and dreams, if duty calls or inspires
When inescapable duty calls or inspires.
Alas, I cannot forget my devotion though covered in shame

And far be it from me to forget my reverence as I kissed
As if I'm a sinner seeking forgiveness since the day
Your earth, like a sinner seeking forgiveness.
I left resentfully, thousands of miles full of wrath

لدن جزت آلاف الفراسخ ساخطا
علىat الظلمoppression والظلامand oppressors أشبعهمI satiate them قدحاwith censure
على الظلم والظلام أشبعهم قدحا
Ever since I crossed thousands of leagues, indignant
At injustice and darkness I quenched them with wine
At oppression and oppressors, sating them with censure.
Reputation, glory and wealth became trivial to me

وهان لديّ الصيت والجاه والغنى
فمنfor from غيرهاother than them قلبيmy heart تنسمbreathed in fragrance واستوحىand drew inspiration
فمن غيرها قلبي تنسم واستوحى
And renown, prestige, and wealth grew insignificant to me;
Without them my heart breathes and finds inspiration
For my heart breathed in fragrance and drew inspiration from other things.

And you were [for me] a home and a pulpit for a cause,
As you were a guiding light, dawn shone at daybreak
Just as you were a light to me, whose dawn outshone dawn itself.
Eight years or more we've known, as if from a thousand nights drawn

Eight years, or more, I lived through,
Marvels of civilization surpassed legends deemed jest
As though their inspiration came from A Thousand Nights.
Those asleep, impatient that you robbed their slumber

Wonders wrought by civilization surpassed
Your light unlike your knowledge does not fade or grow dim
The fantastic imaginings of those who thought its wonders a jest.
But I sensed in you my bliss and bid you no farewell
وقدand indeed ضاقgrew constrained ذرعاin patience منthose whose سلبتyou stole نعاسهمtheir slumber
وقد ضاق ذرعا من سلبت نعاسهم

فليلك نور مثل علمك لا يمحى
And those whose slumber you stole lost patience,
As if I'm your own, you rained love and renewed my zeal
For your night is light, like your knowledge, never effaced.
Not just the misguided resent you for your grace or gift

But in you I found my happiness,
But those who knew my dignity for your beauty or charm
And I have not forgotten the welcome you offered as gifts.
Teacher of the free, how they stand so tall

فأمطرتني حبا وجددت لي نقحا
As though I were of your people—indeed, among their finest.
Making their dreams whatever comes true or right
So you showered me with love and renewed refinement for me.
Parting from you disturbs me as if I'm not going

And those who thought you sheer grimness are not
To paradise but exile, no cheer or delight
Among those who have known a manifestation or aspect of your beauty.
If I live in comfort I remain a pilgrim to you

Teaching the free how to stand firm,
Arming my joyous soul with faith and delight
And making all their dreams waking reality.

My separation from you keeps me sleepless, as though I were
But for you I weighed praise and saw you were bright
Going into exile, not to a spacious paradise.
I listened until my feelings seemed to reside in it

So, if I live in bliss, may you ever remain a Kaaba,
Or it became my elquent verse for you I recite
Supplying my joyful soul with faith.

You are used to newcomers' praise and censure,
Flooding in tears or gushing from me like a wound
Given at random; but I have weighed my praise for you.

Have settled within it—or it is my most eloquent sign,
Leaving is admitting defeat after your triumph

And crowning victory was decisively borne
[Unclear], and an outpouring of my tears, or a wound.
Will days of our bliss return, even glimpses I greet?

And one may leave cities, not from a wish to shun them,
Or is it wished for in vain, never to be worn
Nor from waning affection, like one who seeks profit,
Then I care not for distances that estranged us

But by fortune's decree; for fortune is like war,
Or time that advised me, I'm not to be torn
And amid its violence, battle may give birth to peace.

And end it as I should, with no thought forlorn
I attained through you crowned victory and conquest.

But the spirit in you beyond structure borne
Their reproaches, nor time harrying me with counsel.

And I shall slaughter sorrow as a sacrifice, without faltering,
And my lot, my heart clings to you, forlorn
And expiate it—better to end it by slaughter.

Even if my bewilderment has driven me from your heights,
And my livelihood too, yet my heart is attached to you—or has become so.
