    I have a few friends whom I deemed

    Dearer than jewels are to a destitute miser.

    بل بجلوني كالنبي الملهم

    Never once did they look at me with suspicion;

    Rather, they revered me like an inspired prophet.

    عادت مفاخرها وعدت إليهم

    From them I drew my rays, and to them

    Their glories returned, and I returned to them.

    وتجمعوا حولي وحول تألمي

    Time turned, but they did not revolve around it;

    And they gathered around me and around my suffering.

    They created joys for me from sorrow's very core,

    Until calamities seemed to be my bliss.

    Not among them is he who sold the treasure of my affection,

    And it was as though he had sold my honor or my blood.

    He made hypocrisy his food and drink,

    And scheming his trade, and blessed my funeral.

    ما للنكاية غير فرط تبسمي

    And went on reminding me of his favors after hurting me;

    His malice met with nothing but my abundant smiles.

    تحيا ولست بمن يدنس مرقمي

    I am a man who lives because my faith

    Lives, and I am not one to sully my pen;

    And because I am above suspicion, and my principle

    Was never for those who approve or those who blame.

    And if I am stabbed by the one I loved,

    Then I bear my own guilt; may I never know regret.

    A world I shall traverse without compassion

    From it, though I have not withheld my compassion from it.

    O you who live quarrelsomely, and whose life

    Is deceit upon deceit and an abundance of delusion,

    إن المحبة لا تكون لأرقم

    Do not think I love you after your treachery;

    Love is not for a speckled serpent.

    If I was blinded by the affection of a schemer

    Skilled in many arts, or a singing sorcerer,

    Then truth refuses to let me squander my compassion,

    And justice refuses to let me be misled like the blind.
