I drank my philosophy from the wellspring of my pain,

and before it, my bleeding heart drank deeply from that spring.

And I have never ceased to sing, forever brimming over,

as though my heart's pains were not my own.

As though my tears were songs held back,

until they are poured out as melodies upon my sanctuary.

Christ groaned in burning anguish shortly before the crucifixion,

as I suffer my agonies and my execution.

And if I am envied, it is as though misery were an honor to me,

and all the wealthy were my servants in misery.

I am weak, yet unyielding toward

myself, if the soul pays no heed to my decrees.

Beware, beware, O my soul, of making peace

with injustice—or else cower in a prison of darkness.

The meaning of life is a smile that never leaves it,

even if it is surrounded by unsmiling barrenness.

And am I anything but a symbol that it withholds

from extinction, even if I spend my years?

They faulted truth in my poetry, yet nothing has dwelt

but truth in the loftiest of my lofty verse.

It never sank low, though the ignorant fail to know

that life has risen above dreams,

and that my passion, my thought, and my philosophy

are but examples of a painter's art:

one who tasted immortality with winged colors

above the stars and in the colors of hillocks.

All nature is an object of worship for his soul,

    formed around visions and inspiration,

stretching and throbbing, with no boundary to contain it,

like my heart's beat over my growing awareness.

I am her son; time cannot diminish my trace,

nor has it ever diminished light or celestial bodies.

How many a small thing has sunk into insignificance

in people's eyes, though it is majestic, towering, sublime,

like a seed, or a stray drop of the sea.

It is existence, reaching its utmost above the breezes.

I grasped it in my imagination; thus it is my philosophy,

even if it lies beyond the grasp of beasts and idols.

It flies, drunk with joy, and is lifted

by love of life to the furthest reaches of daring.

As though it were a hunter whose ardor repelled

the fear of death amid jungles and thickets.

I conquer as it conquered the world, even if I fail,

and even if I am torn apart by my adversaries' treachery.

The experiences in my world suffice me; I understand them,

even if they are subtle and unrevealed to minds.

Enough for me is my sense that the entire universe

will one day be recited and flow over pens.

Enough for me, despite worry and weariness,

is that I am free and have not yielded to coercion.
