عزيَّتُI consoled نفسيmyself وماand not عزيتهاI consoled it اسفاًout of grief
علىover تباريحtorments وجدانيmy feelings وأمراضيand my illnesses
I consoled myself, yet not out of grief
Over my inward torments and my illnesses.
فقدfor indeed رضيتُI accepted قديماًlong ago ماwhat شقيتُI suffered بهbecause of it
ولمand not أزلI ceased ذلكَthat one المستعذبَthe one who finds it sweet الراضيthe contented one
For long ago I accepted what made me suffer,
And I have remained the same, finding it sweet, content.
وكمand how often عزفتُI turned away عنfrom الإثراءbecoming wealthy ينشدنيit seeks me
وماand not بكيتُI wept علىover الآتىwhat is to come ولاnor والماضيand the past
And how often I shunned wealth as it sought me,
And I have wept neither over the future nor the past.
ماnot ثروتيmy wealth غيرother than نفسيmyself إنif سموتُI rose high بهاwith it
فإنand if هويتُI fell ففقريthen my poverty بينamong أنقاضيmy ruins
My only wealth is my own self, if I raise it high;
But if I fall, my poverty lies among my ruins.
وليسand is not مجدِيmy glory بفنيin my art بلbut بعاطفتيin my feeling
تَنزَّهتit kept itself pure عنfrom حماقاتٍfollies بأغراضيin my aims
And my glory lies not in my art but in my feeling,
Which has kept itself free of folly in my aims.
انif عشتُI lived عيشةَa life انسانٍof a human being غنيتُI became rich بهاthrough it
ولمand not يكنwas غيرother than قلبيmy heart الفيصلthe arbiter القاضيthe judge
If I live a human life, I am enriched by it,
And my heart alone has been the arbiter and judge.
وماand not أُباليI care مدىthe extent of إعراضِturning away ذىone possessed of سَفهٍfoolishness
عنيfrom me ولكنand yet أُباليI care عنهfrom him أعراضيmy turning away
And I care not how far a fool turns away
From me; but I care about my turning away from him.
وانand if تَدليَّتُI sank منbecause of لؤمٍbaseness ومنand because of جشعgreed
فليسthen not يرفعنيraises me بأسِىmy might وإيماضيِand my flashes
And if I sink through baseness and greed,
Then neither my might nor my flashes will lift me.
وليسand does not يُكرمنيhonors me حَفلٌa celebration يضيقgrows cramped بهin it
مَدحُpraise الشُّداةthe singers وتقديسيand hallowing me وإنهاضيand lifting me up
Nor does a celebration honor me, too small to contain
The singers' praise, their hallowing and lifting me up.
