And a woman asked, “Do you compose poetry by instinct?”

So I said, “Yes—but with my tears and my fires.”

Whether its melody sounds in nature’s sanctuary,

or in the temple of love that purifies my soul,

or in the wilderness of the grieving earth, lamenting

earth’s children, as I mourn my existence and my human self,

it burst from my heart in streams of anguish,

as blood lying hidden in the songs of knights.

May it perish if I let it fall to ruin,

as a snare of vanity or a mount for tyranny,

and have not preserved it to uplift my nation

and my bonds of kinship—rather, to exalt my faith.

May it perish if it is merely pleasure,

and a stage for illusions and a [display] of melodies,

and does not uplift people, but creates for them

worlds of goodness, love, and kindness.

So, you who deny nobility in the universe, scoffing

at truth: disbelief brings no glory to an artist.

I shall kindle in my exile the finest poetic feelings,

if, in your own abode, you are a grieving soul’s choking anguish.

    I shall endure bitter torment—privation,

and hatred and vilification—to secure justice for my homelands.

Then, if I live, let truth’s blood be drawn from my blood,

as [ink] for a covenant and monks’ crosses.

And if I die, the heart that I leave behind

in my poetry will live, beating with a volcano’s pulse.

And the tyrant must have a pit of his own,

and wrongdoers cannot escape the wrongdoer’s downfall.
