My loyalty to my friend Abu Ali

Is the grass's loyalty to the generous dew.

I breathed your roses' fragrance during my illness,

And it revived me like a revelation from a prophet.

And the fragrance is still my nose's companion,

And my blood's intimate friend, like a brilliant thought.

Rubies that shone in their redness—

Who, then, is like me, with my rich inheritance?

As though their radiance and their adornments' fragrance,

Once blended, were a jeweler's artistry.

    But those are little hearts,

Great in symbols and in rhyme.

They flutter with their poetry, and my heart flutters,

In whispered communion with them and with my confidant.

My friend is he whose love I have found true,

    As with my bees and sugar-sweet nectar;

And he whose visit was a cure

    Scattered through pearl-like conversation,

And from his sleeves, in graceful tenderness,

    And in wondrous, bashful warmth.

Year after year flees from me,

And Abu Ali draws ever nearer.

As though his tenderness were recompense for my life—

Yes, and a reward for my devout praise.

And he to whom I gave my pure affection turned away,

As though abandonment were the loyal one's lot.

Yet you remained my hoped-for treasure,

With your love, you make everything beautiful to me.

And even if I were crucified as payment for my sincerity,

I would cherish my end, as would a saint.
