My lord, foremost knight, may I speak,

After a welcome from a poet who does not equivocate,

With a tale, a story never imparted

To the ages without life's nobility?

Its events were neither invented nor recorded

On sheets of paper or on stone,

    بل حكاها دمٌ ودمعٌ جارى

    Nor told by a storyteller displaying his art;

Rather, blood and flowing tears told it.

From you comes its inspiration, and from me a song,

In whose folds lies the utmost of my reverence.

And happy is whoever chooses you—happy,

Like the grasses' delight in blossoms,

And the stirring of barren land as it witnesses

    Life's arrival in the rains,

And the exultation of imagination, though wandering,

At the union of melodies and poems.

They said a messenger was among a people

Who reaped human heads in vainglory.

They heeded no lord, nor ever knew

    Love or kinship toward humankind.

How many noble heads they flung down!

Then these became museum pieces for them to tend.

So he called them to right guidance, but

They turned away whenever he drew nearer.

    And finally, after long hardship,

They promised him his call would be heeded,

Asking his leave for a hunt,

Just one, before they renounced war.

He said, 'Do you swear? That is a pledge.'

They answered, 'Yes, in tongue and heart.'

He said, 'I hear you. Then a stranger will come

    Tomorrow; slaughter and crucify him.'

Then the awaited morrow came before dawn,

    Revealing the wonders of secrets.

And nature revealed herself within it, all light,

Like a bride moving proudly among the glittering stars.

    Everything inspired gladness and poetry

    For devout guides and unbelievers.

And behold the stranger, overflowing with cheer,

    Approaching without fear or stumbling.

Then they fell upon him, beating him and cutting his throat,

And sang the song of those who boast.

Then they came to their senses and afterward saw a horror,

Unmatched, and never sanctioned by beasts of prey.

    What sin—in thought and stone—

Could match killing a friend, and then my boasting?

They killed him, though he had disguised himself in secret

To redeem humankind from the wicked.

My friend, this is the story of a world

Made wretched by tyrants and the wicked.

It is our people's world; they have befouled it

    By hunting heads without apology.

    They slaughter the choicest geniuses,

And compete in harming the free.

How many precious heads they have subdued!

Then they revived chaos with shame and laurel.

And we have seen you struggle for an age,

Like the struggle of a fearless herald,

Crying out, lamenting, at times rebuking,

And educating with your mighty mind.

And the wicked keep going forth in sin,

Sacrificing the choicest of the good.

O my friend, enough of preaching upon preaching,

And beware of sacrificing yourself one day—beware!

People are human only through unbowed feeling,

And through brotherhood's spirit, as individuals and as a people.

We have never known history, in describing a people,

    To glorify the wanton for killing and plunder;

Nor seen the miraculous come to a prophet

    Among a people who hurt him with kicks and blows;

    لعبيدٍ تأبونَ للفكرِ رَبَّا

    Nor seen golden liberation

    For slaves who reject thought as master;

Nor heard of a genius going to waste

    In lands that regard ignorance as a sin;

    في شعوبٍ علت جواءً وُسحبا

    Nor recalled a pretender's supremacy

    Among peoples risen above the sky and clouds;

Nor known a right folded away by progress,

Or claims that protect falsehood and plunder.

    ليس يَنساهُ أى حُرٍ تأبَّى

    That is your noble, pure teaching;

No free, unbowed person forgets it.

Welcome to the armored warrior, returned to us!

We have the greater claim to his incisive mind.

Welcome to dignity in thought and person:

We gaze our fill upon him, smiling like the day.

Welcome to loftiness that never stoops!

Welcome to refuge in the hurricane!

    Welcome to majesty unattainable

For a tyrannical ruler, however long he has desired it.

Welcome to the man of letters who champions truth,

With verses full of wisdom and mastery.

Welcome to the orator who rises ever higher,

With arts for hearing and sight.

Welcome to the unbowed one who rejects slavery,

While tyrants shuffle, fettered, in rancor.

Welcome to the leader, in West and East,

O my heart, and welcome, O my watchword!
